Asking for help to pay for medical transport of retired firefighter paramedic.
Dennis Cox served as a paramedic and firefighter for the Kansas City, Kansas, fire department for 33 1/2 years. He was one of the first paramedics to man the “KARE” ambulances, later training as a firefighter as well as being an “emergency medical intensive care technician “ until his retirement. His son-in-law, Travis, is also a paramedic firefighter in Kansas City, Kansas. Since his retirement he has continued his employment at Walmart in the electronics department where his friendly and knowledgeable help is known by many.
In the spring of 2018, a tumor was found in Dennis’s lung. Never a smoker, he has been undergoing treatment for lung cancer at KU medical center, including chemo and radiation after removal of half a lung in October. His treatment is still ongoing from KU.
On June 8, Dennis drove to Bemidji, Minnesota, for a family fishing trip. On June 11, after becoming short of breath, he was admitted to the hospital in Bemidji where blood clots were found in his lungs. His condition was improved with hopes of returning to KU to see his own doctors, when he developed a bleed that required administering 5 units of blood over a 2 day period.
This episode has complicated his condition and the doctors say he now needs a medical air transport to return to Kansas City because he will need to be intubated to stabilize and control his oxygen saturation.
Because of these needs it is not possible to travel by vehicle the distance to Kansas City. He has been in the hospital in Minnesota for over a month. We need to get him home to his doctors at KU medical center!
The cost of the air medical transport is at least $35,000. His wife has stayed at a motel in Minnesota to be with him, never dreaming it would take over a month!
Dennis has given so much to so many people! Any donations to help make this possible will be greatly appreciated ! If you can’t help at this time, please remember Dennis and his family in your prayers. Thank you.
