Team Armenia needs your help to reach the WSDC Championships in Bangkok, Thailand this summer!
Who are we?
Hello! We are six international students on scholarship at the United World College Dilijan in Armenia who are committed to the development of education through discussion and debate, putting constructive civic engagement as our foremost value. We have led several projects to boost the development of a debate society in Armenia, such as the debate club in the Dilijan Community Center we coach and the two editions of Yerevan Debate Academy we organized, but we have also formed the Armenian delegation to participate in this year’s World Schools Debating Championships to be held in Bangkok, Thailand in July. This is a World Cup equivalent for academic debating at high school level, having over 60 countries participating this year. We attended last year’s edition in Zagreb, being the first ever Armenian delegation to compete in WSDC
Why are we fundraising?
While our excitement about the competition reflects in our training and preparation, we have assessed our financial circumstances to realize that, even after funding ourselves to the fullest possible extent, we still need to find other sources of funding to attend the competition. This is because we all come from different countries - Bermuda, Mexico, Slovakia, Turkey, and the US. Here is where we ask you to help us get there! Your contribution (of any size, shape, form, and so on and so on) gets us one step closer to the competition and to gaining skills, contacts, and experience to keep working on our debate project in Armenia. The money we gather will be distributed amongst the team members to alleviate the burden of our airfare to Bangkok and the competition’s registration fee, which is $800 per person.
What does our project look like?
For the past two years we have managed to engage with communities here to start debate and civic discourse. A few of the things we’ve started are a debate club at our school, a training group with middle school students from the local Community Center, or Yerevan Debate Academy, in which beginner debaters from Armenia’s capital get to develop skills through workshops, test each other in a tournament, and form a debate community over a weekend. We as well as collaborate with debate communities in the region while we plan ahead how to upscale our project in the near future.
When it comes to your donation, even though it does not go directly to any of our smaller projects, it does get us closer to compete this year in Bangkok, which allows us to get a degree of experience in debating, networks with the international debate community, and facilitate the our management of logistics in debate immensely. Without what we learned last year attending WSDC in Zagreb it would have been nearly impossible for us to work with the community and teach and learn debate with it. In a similar way, very little of our projects would have succeeded without the help, both directly and through guidance, of members of the international debate community that we got to know mainly because of the tournament.
We already thank you for your faith in our project as well as any kind of help you can lend us out to keep our commitments to developing debate in Armenia, as well as growing as debaters ourselves.
