Help Conan Heal

Donation protected
Hello, we are the Maxfield family. We are a happy pack of mammals that consist of two humans -Marlena and Adam, two dogs- Conan and Dottie, and one cat- Shakira. On April 8th 2019 while us humans were traveling to visit an ill family member, the worst imaginable thing happened to our beloved dogs. While under the care of a pet/house sitters there was a incident with an Airbnb guest that resulted in Conan having a 5inch deep puncture wound to his chest. It has been confirmed by 5 different veterinary professionals that this wound was cause by impalement. I will do my best to explain how this all happened since we are still trying to wrap our heads around it. We have pieced together the evidence we do have via our ring doorbell and what the pet sitter witnessed and heard. The best we can tell is that one of these men who we opened our home to came into our common space where our dogs were and intentionally injured Conan via impalement and then this man walked outside on to our front porch and watched as Conan lashed out at Dottie due to the pain. Both of our dogs sustained non serious bites from the other but Conan had another injury that was clearly not a dog bite. Now let me clarify that these two dogs absolutely adore one another. Neither have ever had any dog aggression and regularly attend doggy daycare. They do everything together including eating and have never had any issues with them not getting along in the past. This fight was the result of this evil human being in our home, that we know for sure. We have opened our home to many travelers over the last year and all have loved our pets so never did we think something this horrendous was possible or could happen to us. But it did. Conan was initially brought into his regular vet where they stitched up his wounds. The very large 5” deep wound then ripped back open a few days later due to the skin dying. He returned to an emergency vet where they had to reopen his wound and cut away the dead skin. By this time he also had an infection and needed to be hospitalized at the University of Minnesota and that is where he is now. So far our vet bills are well over $4000 and this will be an ongoing cost and treatment for many months to come. We are beside ourselves that our sweet loving boy is having to go through all of this pain and that a human did this to him. We have worked hard to make sure our dogs are social and loving animals. Having our home and trust violated in this way is beyond heartbreaking.
