I began teaching at Mott Hall III Middle School three years ago. Throughout my school's hallways were plaques, trophies and pictures all commemorating the Mott Hall III Chess Team. However, by the time I'd gotten to the school the chess team didn't exist. Due to budget constraints, the school was no longer able to hire the chess coaches from the Chess-in-the-Schools organization. My principal was thrilled when she heard that I wanted to bring a chess team back to the school.
It's been three years since then and we've come a long way. Through my students' hard work and encouragement of each other we've added several new trophies and plaques to our school's hallways from the different NYC tournaments we've played in. This is all the more impressive considering my students don't have a full-time professional chess coach like most schools do.
As a send-off and reward for all the hard work my students have put in over the last three years, we want to attend the United States Chess Federation's Supernationals Tournament in Nashville, TN this spring. It's the biggest student tournament in the U.S. and features tutorials, Grand Master demo. games, and would give my students the chance to play and learn from over 5,000 other students from around the country. Many other teams have told us that playing at Nationals and Supernationals have been the best experiences they're had as a team. My students are very excited at this possibility, and any donation you could make would be a huge help to us. Thank you for your time in reading this. Happy Holidays!
