Help Rebuild 66 Water Street
The staff at 66 Water Street needs your help! As the epic storm barreled down on DUMBO, 66 Water Street's basement refrigerators were stacked high with lobster, baby back ribs and racks of lambs. Hurricane Sandy, the largest Atlantic hurricane on record "“ as well as the second costliest Atlantic hurricane, quickly flooded DUMBO (over eight of feet), destroying our Under Water Lounge (Largest full-service event space in DUMBO). Our 7,000 square foot duplex was entirely damaged on the lower level, including newly purchased ice machine (see photo), new stove and new fryer, in addition to all of our food and liquor supplies and music equipment, etc. Our insurance claim was denied!
Some economists worry about the long-term effect on the restaurant industry and it's workers. Beyond the initial loss of product and damage to property, the ongoing lack of business doesn't lessen the need to pay overhead, employees don't get paid if they can't get to work, or if there is no work to get to. 66 Water Street has a large staff with families that need at the very least living expenses. It is going to take a while for business to return to normal, but New York restaurants are resilient. Some restaurants won't make it, but I'm confident most of us will. 66 Water Street has been in business for more than 11 years.
