Support Game Critic Mattie Brice!

New to my fund? Read this to find out what I'm all about!

I'm arriving at the point of my life that despite the lack of jobs and questionable applicability of my English degree, I'm finding what I want to do with the rest of my life. It's exciting, scary, challenging, and most of all, it's VIDEO GAMES. Actually, all sorts of games, but I've become a part of the video game industry in a way I would have never guessed. I now wear many hats- game critic, journalist, social justice activist, creative writer, consultant, and by the end of my grad program I'll feel comfortable calling myself a game designer. With a little over a year of involvement with the game industry, I've appeared in nine publications and invited to six conferences, often to speak. Don't take my word for it, check out my portfolio
here. My minority experience as a transgender, multiracial woman in games along with my knowledge of narrative and design is often solicited and cited in current discourse.

So then, why am I here asking you for money? While many will attest to my cultural relevancy, there is little money for game criticism and I've had to foot the travel bills on my grad school funding. Because reimbursement from my department goes through a bureaucratic process and isn't guaranteed, it looks like I won't have enough money for rent and keeping up with my basic needs.

These conventions and conferences are amazing opportunities for me; where someone can only afford to donate $1, they are contributing to a priceless experience that has exponentially positive effects for my status in the industry. If I didn't go to this year's Game Developers Conference, I wouldn't have been invited to speak at IndieCade and GDC Online. Going to Penny Arcade Expo East landed me on a panel at PAX in Seattle. If I didn't move to San Francisco because of it's high cost of living, no Arse Elektronika for me. These are the most obvious and direct, as I've gained many friendships and networking connections that will continue to benefit me. Ultimately, if I want to do what I love, I have to keep traveling, I have to keep myself visible.

This current goal is to make up for the traveling costs for PAX, IndieCade, and GDCO that has set me back enough to be in hot water. It only includes airfare, hotels, and other transportation needs like metro passes and cab rides along with the fee the site takes out. Before I can do anything else, I need to take care of this goal, or else I'll be out of food and a place to stay!

After reaching the first goal, I will use this funding page to keep me going past the new year. This next phase will be a lot more interactive and will show where people want me. So you can either continue to donate to my general fund or contribute to a particular event you want to see me at! I'm open to everyone's input as to what others see me doing, and you can ask me questions here!

As a taste for what events are next on the map for me to attend early 2013, I'm looking at IndieCade East, GDC, PAX East, and PAX Australia. To suggest more and for everything else, press the contact button on my profile here and let's talk!

For those who need to use PayPal, you can use my email to find me: [email redacted].

Other Ways You Can Help Me

Refer Me as a Consultant, Writer, or Editor

I offer my knowledge concerning diversity issues and narrative design, along with writing and editing skills to game companies. I'll scale my pricing to the size and needs of who I'm working for, so this is also open smaller development teams. Keep in mind that I am based in San Francisco, but will travel if it's covered for me. Here's some of the services I offer:

*Reviewing game material for issues concerning sexism, racism, and other forms of marginalization
*Offering analysis and workshops related to workplace treatment of minority employees
*Editing and feedback in the way of narrative and game design
*Creative writing, copy editing, essays, articles
*Classes and workshops on writing, diversity, and other areas I specialize in

Invite Me to Events

Assuming it is related to my interests, I will attend and speak at events if my traveling costs are covered. My speaking experience consists of lectures, speeches, being a panelist and hosting events and podcasts.

Support Game Criticism and Minority Visibility in Games

The game industry is changing, and one great movement is diversifying the content put into games, the people who work on games, and the publications that write about them. Game criticism and new games journalism are the bastions for minority writers but are rarely published and paid by larger media sites. As well, the number of minority issues in games, and the recognition of minority developers, is severely lacking. Write to your favorite writers, websites, and development studios to express your wish for more diverse content. Let them know that writers like me interest you and would be an asset to their company.

Simply sending this to those who might be interested is a great way to help me out. The more people who know, the more likely my goals will succeed. Every email, tweet, and like counts!
