Dowling Middle School - DC College Tour

As a Social Studies Teacher at Dowling Middle School, it is my duty to teach my students about the world around them. While many of them have yet to venture outside of Houston, they all have dreams of attending college. Unfortunately, many of my students have never been on a college campus let alone a college campus in Washington DC. WIth this being said, this year we (my colleagues and I) want this to change. We want to bring Dowling Middle School to Washington DC. This would give our students the opportunity to explore our nation's capital while gaining an experience of a lifetime. Washington DC is the home of Howard University, Georgetown University, American University,The Catholic University of America and Trinity University. Taking my students on this tour is more than a visit to a new city. For some, it will be their first time out of Texas, their first time on a college campus and their first time seeing people that look like themselves on a college campus.

It is estimated that this trip will cost a little under $20,000. Dowling Middle School is a Title I school and more than 87% of my students receive free/reduced lunch. Now that I have painted that picture for you, I'm sure you can understand why I am reaching out for your generosity and support. My students, colleagues and I will be fundraising money from now until March. It is my goal to reach $3,000.00 or more alone. WIth your help I know that we can meet this goal. I would truly appreciate all efforts to make this happen for my kids (and so would they!).
