1827 For Black Youth Helpline
CrossFit 1827 has a very close and supportive community. I like to think that everyone who walks through the door is supported, respected and is comfortable (as you can be while lifting heavy and WOD-ing) every moment they are in the building. But just to step in our door you unfortunately have to be privileged. We are not easily accessed unless by car, our membership rates are far above what minimum wage can afford. Most of our members don't think twice about this when they are enjoying their workouts and socializing with other members. We are able to access this community daily thanks to our success through schooling and into the working world. Unfortunately, whiteness impacts who can enter our gym and we all have our work to do in unlearning our unconscious biases. Facing structural discrimination and anti-black racism in the school system, in life, and workplace communities can impact and alter black youth’s career and educational trajectories.
This is why we are choosing to support Black Youth Helpline financially at this time – we, here, at CrossFit 1827 wish to explicitly indicate that #blacklivesmatter and show solidarity with Black communities. This organization supports, fights for, and make changes in youth’s lives in Ontario and throughout Canada. This charity works towards removing barriers, family support, staying in school initiatives and supporting mental health challenges in 'complex needs youths'. Regardless of gender, race, culture or characteristics, all children should be given an equal chance, so let's help by donating to the Black Youth Helpline.
