After securing a place as the only Irish delegate on the '2041 Antarctic Youth Ambassador Programme', I will be taking part in an expedition to Antarctica in February 2013.

About the Antarctic Youth Ambassador Programme.

    Aim

To create an international youth coalition of Antarctic defenders who will champion renewable energy as their path to saving the continent.

For Phase One of this project I will be going on an Antarctic Expedition with Rob Swan OBE in February 2013, Rob was the first person in history to walk to both the north and south poles and since then has been a climate change and sustainability leader globally. Every year Rob brings a group of Government Representatives and Industry Leaders to Antarctica to highlight the need for it's protection, this year a small elite group of young people (myself included) were invited to attend to engage with, and offer out perspective of Climate Change issues and Polar Protection on this Expedition.

Phase Two will be the work I undertake as an Antarctic Youth Ambassador when I return to Ireland. I will be travelling around schools and businesses in Ireland promoting the protection of Antarctica, climate change issues, and sustainable business practices. My aim is to create 2041 Mini Climate Ambassadors around the country. I have built a network with Foroige through their NFTE Programme to assist me in accessing young people who I will be presenting to on my return.

I have secured funding from ECOCEM, Kimmage Development Studies Centre and from the French Embassy in Ireland for this project.

In 12 weeks, I have raised over €15,000. I am now looking for support for the final push to reach my target!

Antarctica!Antarctica is vast. Twice the size of Australia, it is an island continent, east of the sun, west of the moon and south of everything else. The continent holds 90% of the world's ice and 70% of the world's fresh water. It is the highest, driest, coldest and windiest continent on earth. Human activities in Antarctica are governed by an international agreement known as the Antarctic Treaty System, established in 1959.

This unique international agreement ensures that Antarctica is used for peaceful purposes only and that the environment is protected. Currently there is a moratorium in place that bans drilling or mining in Antarctica called the Environmental Protocol, established in 1991. This document can be reviewed after the 50-year anniversary in 2041.
