Help Build a School in Nakuru, Kenya

I have just returned from volunteering at an Education Centre in a small town in Kenya called Nakuru.  The Gabriel Learning Centre is for people living in complete poverty in one of the largest slums in Kenya - Kaptembwa.  It is completely free and provides education for children and adults as well as sewing classes and counseling sessions.

Their aim is to fight poverty through education, skills training, and emotional support, and I have seen with my own eyes how well they are succeeding.  I believe what makes them different to other schools is that they are not just focusing on the children, but on adults as well; for what good is education for the future generation when their parents can't even afford to feed them through their childhood?

The Gabriel Learning Centre was started in 2009 and currently the biggest challenge they face is finding the funds to build a new school. The advantages of this will mean they will be able to hold a total of over 300 families as opposed to their current 100.  They will also add to their Centre a refuge for raped and beaten women to stay and receive counseling until they can find a safe home.  The new location will be inside Kaptembwa, saving some children up to 5km a day to walk to and from school.

After returning from my four week volunteer experience I came home with a whole new outlook on life.  The people I met were the happiest, most grateful people I have ever encountered in my life.  They are the poorest of the poor; a family of ten living in a one-roomed house smaller than my bedroom, often going for days without a single meal.

Please take ten minutes out of your day to watch my video and spare some money for such a wonderful cause, even if it is just the spare change you have in your wallet. Every student that Gabriel's takes on is a whole family saved from poverty.
