Can you help a neighbor in need?

A family in our community needs your help.  Jesus Pagan, an active volunteer archery instructor, is known for his patience, kindness and gentle ways.  Almost two years ago, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.  Identified early, Jesus underwent surgery and aggressive chemotherapy. As a result, he outlived the typical prognosis.

Unfortunately, he also outlived his ability to cover the costs of his illness. Jesus worked for Waste Management, but he lost his job when he became too ill to work. He received COBRA benefits for a while, but as time went on and funds dwindled, he was unable to cover the premium payments.  As a result, he lost his medical coverage.

He and his wife have used all of the resources they had to cover his medical costs and their living expenses.  As money ran out, bills have gone unpaid, and the financial stress only compounded Jesus's deteriorating condition.  Jesus's wife, Jackie, took a leave of absence from her job two months ago to be by his side while he was in hospice care.  Their home is now in foreclosure and bankruptcy is imminent.

Sadly, Jesus passed away on Friday, September 7.  In addition to mourning the loss of her beloved husband, Jackie must now continue to face the difficult ramifications of their financial situation. 

The Pagan family has experienced what we hope we never have to face "“ the terminal illness of a precious loved one coupled with the crushing cost of medical care.  Nonetheless, Jesus met this challenge with dignity and concern for others throughout his last days, discussing his wish to assist the Boy Scouts with their projects instead of his constant pain and discomfort.  We can commemorate Jesus's generous and thoughtful spirit by caring for his loved ones in their time of need.
