Colmenares Hospital Washer & Dryer

Happy Valentines Day! For the next 14 days, from Feb. 14 - Feb. 28th -- I'm asking for some love. Last month I was in the Philippines to help my mom with the care of my uncle, her older brother, who was quite ill. He stayed in the public hospital for nearly a month because palliative care or assisted living aren’t widely available healthcare services in the Philippines.  Colmenares District Hospital is a public hospital -- and like most public hospitals -- it’s highly under-resourced. They are often over capacity -- sometimes seeing over 100 patients -- with only 20-30 beds. Patients line the hallways in makeshift cots or benches. The hospital has such limited basic necessities like bedsheets. When my mom first arrived at the hospital she noticed that my uncle was laying on a bed without any bed sheets and noticed that a number of the other beds in his ward were not covered. She asked why and was told that they don’t have enough and the ones that were recently washed are still drying. It had rained the day before, so the bed sheets were wet. They had hung them outside to dry because they don’t have a dryer and with only one washing machine to serve the WHOLE hospital, they couldn’t turn the bed sheets quickly. I was struck by this when my mom shared the story, and I saw for myself when I arrived just a couple of days after her.

The hospital’s service area includes four surrounding towns, but people from farther towns come to Colmenares District Hospital because of the medical and caregiving staff.  Despite their lack of resources, the hospital turns no one away. The doctors and nurses and caregivers there do the best they can with what they have, and I saw first hand how they treat every patient with the care they need and with kindness. My uncle stayed there until he passed.

My mom and I are compelled to help. We purchased a couple of air conditioning units while we were there for two of their largest wards. And now, we’d like to do two more things and we’d love your help. From Feb. 14 - Feb. 28th (midnight), we are:

Raising $3000 to purchase one commercial washing machine and one commercial dryer.  Any amount that you can offer would be much appreciated. If 30 people donate $100 that would be amazing!  Here are the products we plan to purchase:
