10k Run for Teesside Samaritans

The Story

My dad, Mick, has lived with depression for many years  - its a cruel illness which can really hinder quality of life and drag someone to dark places that no-one deserves to go to.

During a spell in hospital earlier in 2018, my dad met a truly fantastic healthcare professional named Kev who offered him the support he needed as well as a whole heap of kindness and generosity. We all have stories of some of the amazing people who work long hours for the NHS, a real national institution, and Kev is a perfect example.

It was Kev who told my dad about Men Tell Health. - the charity who we were raising funds for.

UPDATE: Alas Men Tell Health have had a few struggles of their own and are stopping their activities until 2019 which is very sad news. We are therefore raising funds on behalf of the Teesside Samaritans.  - a specific regional branch of the Samaritans.

If you have already donated, please rest assured that all funds will be going to the Teesside Samaritans. If you have any concerns with your donation, please just let me know :)

Who are the Teesside Samaritans?

Teesside Samaritans has been offering emotional support to the people of Teesside for  fifty years

They support local schools, colleges and universities. This includes providing promotional materials designed for a younger audience, speaking to children in schools, and developing a positive relationship with the local university. For the past 23 years, Teesside Samaritans has also worked closely with both H.M. Prison Holme House and H.M. Prison Kirklevington Grange.

Teesside Samaritans relies completely on the support of the local community so that we can continue providing their services.

Working in an unfashionable area of the country, every penny raised will make a massive difference in helping the Teesside Branch of the Samaritans raise awareness, fund initiatives to help give men and women, boys and girls, a platform to speak out and get help, whilst also working hand-in-hand with other charities and healthcare providers to provide around-the-clock, 360-degree support and care when people are at their most vulnerable.

The Event

The run we will be taking part in is the Mo Run (10k) Leeds  on 3rd November 2018.

This is organised by the Movember Foundation, a charity with men's mental and physical health at its core, with part of proceeds going to the charity itself. Therefore 2 charities will be benefiting from our participation  - 2 birds with 1 stone is often a good thing!

There's a group of 12+ of us, my dad and his family & friends (and if anyone else wants to join, please do let me know - we'd love to have you alongside us!) who will be participating together as one.

We'll also have fantastic support on the sidelines from my mum, aunt and other family/friends/pets, who'll have the pleasure and pain of watching the grimaces on the faces of the participants.

Together as One

We will be running the race together as one group to show how, together, we really are stronger. Although some of us may have taken part in 10k runs in the past (and some of us do them for fun perhaps oddly!), it's not really about the level of endurance here...

It's about the teamwork, the camaraderie and the spirit of completing such an event as one, in and amongst hundreds of other like-minded individuals, to show none of us are alone and that we all deserve help and support in this sometimes-isolating world.

It may be a cliché but there's no denying it's true.

There'll be physical pain, gritted teeth and chafed private parts as is par for the course (10k is still a fair distance!) but there'll also be a whole host of smiles, laughs, jokes and witty/sarcy remarks (as well as inspiring Alan Partridge quotes in my case) as we compete as a team.

Thank You

Firstly I must thank everyone for reading all the way through to this point.

We know there are many charity runs, walks, bike rides, baked bean baths (there should be more of these in my opinion) etc that we are asked to contribute to, and clearly the money all adds up, but if you can spare anything from loose change up to the big bucks for us as a group, you will get a lot of kudos, love and attention from us.

Thanks,
Robbie, Mick & The Team
