100th Anniversary of Morewood Cenotaph

Donation protected
The Morewood Cenotaph Fundraising Committee (Chaired by Christopher Paré) is pulling out all the stops, during this most difficult period of the COVID-19 Pandemic, to keep Remembrance alive & well in the small Hamlet of Morewood, Ontario.  The 100th Anniversary of the unveiling and dedication of the Morewood Cenotaph on July 6th, 1921 is quickly approaching.  With this in mind, we have a number of Cenotaph restoration and enhancement projects that we wish to complete prior to a Sunset Rededication Ceremony planned for Tuesday, July 6th, 2021.  The ceremony and the follow-on social “meet me on main street” event with food and refreshments will be open to whoever wishes to attend.

The current COVID-19 environment that we find ourselves in is not helping because we have had to cancel a number of planned social fundraising activities.  For example, our scheduled June 20th, 2020 dinner, dance and silent auction are off the table.  Therefore, in an attempt to obtain the funds required to complete these 100th Anniversary related projects, we are now looking to raise funds by launching this GoFundMe Page and through an advertising campaign on our Facebook Page.  Outside of generating funds through fundraising activities and donations from within the community, the Morewood Cenotaph Committee (consisting of community volunteers) has no other source of income.

Background Information

After the 1st World War, like in the many large cities around the world, the small community of Morewood came together to erect a Cenotaph to honour their Fallen.  With funding provided by a local family of one of our Fallen, Capt. E. J. Glasgow, the Community sprang into action and launched what would have been considered, even by today’s standard, a very ambitious project.  That project was to erect a monument in memory of their many local Fallen who gave it all, the supreme sacrifice, for us.  The inscription, directly at the foot of the life-size statue of Capt. E. J. Glasgow, states that this cenotaph was erected by the Glasgow Brothers.  It has been stated that Morewood is recognized as having one of the most prominent war memorials in rural Eastern Ontario.

The Morewood Cenotaph Committee, the very proud keeper of this Cenotaph, is looking at a number of projects; with the aim of remembering these fallen soldiers listed on the Cenotaph for the next hundred years and beyond.

The Cenotaph Projects that we are seeking funding for are as follows:

Clean up Cenotaph:  Use high pressure cleaning equipment and specialized solution to remove the last 100 years of staining.  Repoint and re-parge the monument areas that have been identified as requiring repairs.  Estimated cost of $3,500.00

Warped Name Plaque:  Remove and straighten the badly warped plaque listing the Fallen Soldiers, clean it up and drill additional mounting holes to attach it more securely.  Add Private Maurice Ogden Cheney's name to the list of fallen from the 1st World War.  Estimated cost of $3,300.00

Flag Pole:  Install a new 30’ aluminum flag pole, with interior hardware; this will prevent the flag from always becoming entangled in the cables.  Estimated cost of $3,218.47.

Hydro Service:  Install a lockable Hydro 110 Volt receptacle at the Cenotaph to provide power for sound system, etc., during ceremonies.  Costing not yet completed.

Lighting:  With hydro on the cenotaph grounds two LED spot lights will be installed left and right just inside the cenotaph gate.  They will provide good illumination of the cenotaph at night.  Costing not yet completed.

Fallen Soldiers Portraits:  This is our most ambitious project and will add significantly to the Morewood Cenotaph and the grounds for many years to come.  Using a technology that was not available 100 years ago, this project involves etching a portrait of each Fallen Soldier onto Black Granite.  It will identify and commemorate each fallen Soldier by putting a face to each name listed on the cenotaph.  These etched portraits will be mounted on a slant on top of 12” x 12” black granite columns (not cement like in the photo below), approximately 36” high.  Estimated cost of $44,000.00.  The sample portraits shown in the Facebook Power Point Presentation are from the Vars, Ontario Cenotaph.  Unlike the Vars Cenotaph, we will be using black granite above grade; with a cement foundation below grade.

We have contacted Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) on their Commemorative Partnership Program (CPP) for assistance towards funding our Cenotaph projects.  Through their CPP, they provide funding to organizations undertaking remembrance initiatives.  Their next application deadline is November 1, 2020, for community war memorial projects starting on or after April 1, 2021.  Up to 50% of eligible expenditures, not exceeding a maximum of $25,000.00 may be reimbursed.

We have to show VAC in advance of their Nov 1st, 2020 application submission deadline, that we have the balance of the required funding in place before they will entertain our funding application.  Quotes for these projects currently total up to around $54,000.00, plus HST for an additional amount of around $7,000.00.

Even though, the COVID-19 Pandemic has changed many things in our day-to-day lives, we cannot let it overtake and interfere with our collective commitment to Remembrance.  Thank you in advance for any support that you are able to give within your means; no matter how small or big it might be... it is deeply appreciated.

Reg Murphy  and Christopher Paré
