1001 Nights: Love Stories On Death Row: Rock Opera

Donation protected
LET'S MAKE A ROCK OPERA! 1001 Nights: Love Stories On Death Row (A Rock Opera) has been invited to the Fresh Fruit Festival (again) May 1, 2, 3 and this time we’re gonna do it! We don't have much time to put the show together so this fundraiser will help ensure the performers and creative team are compensated properly.

Show Synopsis:

Legendary storyteller Scheherazade is no longer a Queen staving off execution by her cruel husband. She's reborn as Shezadi—an immigrant mother and abuse survivor who shares stories about her life, and folklore from her culture, in order to remain sane during her imprisonment and impending execution. Dina—an African-American corrections officer who is also an abuse survivor—relates to and clashes with Shezadi by sharing her own stories. The show explores diverse experiences of marginalization on Eastern and Western landscapes and takes a critical look at the American prison-industrial complex.

1001 Nights... is a musical play featuring original music (Hip Hop, Rock, World, etc.) that gives opportunities to local bands, hip hop artists, etcetera musicians to collaborate, even improvise, with a colorful array of actors, dancers, and multimedia/video elements.

Previously, work-in-progress performances of 1001 Nights... were commissioned in 2015 by Dixon Place, Theatre for the New City, and Jamaica Performing Arts Center as part of a dance residency. The full script was also solicited Off-Broadway by The Public Theater in 2015 and MCC in 2019. A Spanish-language version of the work-in-progress has won numerous awards including an HOLA award for "Outstanding Musical Production" and a New York Latin ACE Award for "Best Musical." Premier Egyptian composer, the late Hossam Ramzy, called the music "inspiring."

1001 Nights... is one play in a loose trilogy of multidisciplinary, sociopolitical plays bound by storyteller-driven and folklore-saturated narratives, immersive and experimental elements, movement and music heavy sequences.
