Last year over 30 million refugees worldwide were forced to flee their countries and more than 30,000 arrived in Canada with little or nothing.
Although basic needs such as housing, food, and employment are critical, mobility is often overlooked. New refugees typically do not have access to their own vehicles, and often even lack the funds to use public transit.
Bikes Without Borders collects used bicycles, repairs them, and provides these refurbished bicycles to refugees via community partners to help them access basic services such as employment, education, and healthcare. Our goal for 2020 is to supply 1000 refurbished bikes to Toronto-area refugees.
Our cost is approximately $100,000 CAD - including collection, refurbishing, and distribution - to provide a refurbished bike, including helmet, lock and bell,
to a newcomer in need.
We keep our overhead costs extremely low by:
-Using volunteers to pick-up/deliver bikes and repair bikes
-Working with community partners, including a Toronto school (for our bike shop and storage space), various organizations that work with newcomers, and several Toronto-area bike shops that accept donated bikes on our behalf.
Your tax-deductible donation
will help Bikes Without Borders provide recycled bicycles to refugees, enabling them to access education, jobs, explore their neighbourhood, connect with their community, and ultimately help them have a successful new beginning in Canada. Each $100 you donate puts a refurbished bike (and helmet, bell, and lock) in the hands of a newcomer to Toronto. Donations less than $100 are welcome as they also move us closer to our goal!
Bikes Without Borders
is a Toronto-based charity that uses bikes as a tool for development in marginalized communities.
