Please note that the Rebuilding Seminole Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit project that was established following this GoFundMe campaign by the same entities. A tax deductible donation to Seminole Springs residents can now be made to the 501c3 nonprofit Rebuilding Seminole Foundation . This foundation is run by all volunteers and all funds raised are directly disbursed to Seminole residents, with updates publicly announced.
Woolsey Fire Relief for Seminole Springs Mobilehome Park, Inc.
There are many donation pages as the havoc of the Woolsey Fire begins to settle in, and the tremendous need of those affected by this disaster becomes heartbreakingly apparent. We implore you to read and consider one more donation.
On Friday, November 9th, the community of Seminole Springs Mobilehome Park was devastated by the Woolsey Fire and they need our help. More than 100 of their 215 families lost their homes to this fire. OVER ONE HUNDRED HOMES quite literally reduced to rubble and ash. The families of the homes that were spared by the fire have been displaced as well due to the overwhelming damage to the entirety of the property.
Since the 1920s, Seminole Springs has been an iconic little community nestled in the heart of the Santa Monica Mountains. In the 1970s, it transitioned to a mobile home park of 215 homes, and in the 1980s to a resident-owned non-profit cooperative corporation. It was originally established as affordable housing for seniors, and still has many original residents of over 30 years. Now a family-friendly mobile home park, it radiates a sense of community that is truly special. Seminole Springs has an eclectic blend of homeowners that includes young families, senior citizens, and many others who appreciate an affordable living alternative in the heart of the Santa Monica Mountains.
When the fire came, it ignited and surrounded the community so quickly that many of the residents did not have time to pack before they ran for their lives. Seminole Springs is a small, tight-knit community of neighbors who have always been there for one another and now they need us to be there for them. The residents have a long road ahead of them. Each one will need to navigate their own insurance policies before beginning the process of rebuilding. The immediate need is to complete all steps necessary to ensure the entire mobile home park is safe prior to residents returning. This will include removal of hazardous waste and restoration of utilities that were also lost in the fire. The entire infrastructure needs to be repaired, and likely be completely rebuilt, before individual families can begin the process of rebuilding their homes.
Seminole Springs is not a real estate development. It is a non-profit resident-owned cooperative, where residents own their mobile home as well as a share of the park itself. Many of the homes were insured, but some were uninsured or underinsured. And we all know that, even when you have the right insurance, insurance companies may take months or even years to pay and virtually never pay what it actually costs to replace the home. In addition, each resident will be paying their monthly assessments during the time that they are out of their home, while also managing whatever temporary living expenses they may incur. It’s already unbelievably devastating for the majority of one small community to have their homes consumed by a fire. We simply cannot let the situation become even worse for them. There are many families with children living in the park, including two newborns and one due any day. There are senior citizens in their 80’s and 90’s who now do not have homes.
We are hoping to raise funds for the Seminole Springs community. As a whole unit. Funds raised will go directly to the non-profit housing co-op of Seminole Springs. All residents of Seminole have a voice and funds will be used to assist in establishing the park as safe and to fix utilities so that residents can return as soon as possible to rebuild.
Please join us in donating anything you can to help these kind and decent people stay on their land and rebuild their homes. If you can imagine one hundred families you love losing their homes in an instant, then you can begin to imagine what this community is going through. Let’s treat them the way we pray we will be treated if we should ever be so unfortunate to walk in their shoes. Their community will make it through this disaster together. Let’s help them.
