Need eye surgery out of the country

I have been on the Webster Police Department since October 2016. I was On Southbridge PD and Brookfield PD as well but with a full time job, husband and a father to 2 children I cut down to just one department to have a more balanced schedule.

Between all three departments, I have done over 400 hours of training, ride along time and volunteering for various events through the year. I knew that I was always sure this is what I wanted to do as a career, but it has turned into something more than that. It's a passion to help people, to be able to build a bond and trust between the community.

Getting on a Police Department full-time is a very difficult task that's a long and patient journey but rewarding as told by many fellow Officers . I thought my moment was finally here when I received a card for a position at  the Springfield Police Department.

The process went by very quickly and I was notified after my last interview, that I would be hired. I was told I would have to go through a medical exam, a PAT test and psychological exam prior to entering the Police Academy.

One of the steps of the medical exam was a vision test. I wear contacts lenses and Massachusetts has a standard where you have to take the vision test with lenses on and off and must pass with both or you get disqualified from the process. I passed the test with contacts on but not with them off. I was notified that the only way I could get on the academy in time is if I got laser surgery that same week and came back within 4 days to re-test.

In my mind I knew that that was impossible, but I didn’t want to give up. I wanted to exhaust all options. I was able to get an appointment in Brookline, Ma that same day at Boston Laser and Eye.  After a series of tests, I spoke to the Doctor and he told me that due to my high prescription and my astigmatism that I would not be able to get any type of laser surgery.

He said my only option was to get a surgery called Toric ICL. It is the only surgical procedure that is safe and effective and  would clear my astigmatism. Unfortunately the procedure is done in Canada. I have spoken with a Doctor in Canada and was told that the surgery will be $7,000 U.S. dollars. That does not include multiple trips I will have to make. One to measure my eyes and then another to go back and get the surgery done.

I want thank those who took time out of their schedule to read my story. I only ask that you help get it out. Whether or not I reach the goal I set for money to be raised, just having my story be read by many may hopefully have an impact on others to set a goal and to never stop pursuing their dreams. Giving up always seems easy but putting in the work, falling and getting back up and giving it all you have is what makes the dreams come true. Thank you

Respectfully,
