Extraction: Art on the Edge of the Abyss

Tax deductible
A multinational conspiracy of artists raising a ruckus about the exploitation of natural resources. A project for anyone - non-artist as well as artist - who is passionate about art and the environment. Sponsored by the CODEX Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization.

SOUNDING AN ALARM: ENOUGH!

"Are we condemned to be spectators? Can we affect the course of events? Can we claim ‘compassion fatigue’ when we show no sign of consumption fatigue? "
—Sebastiao Salgado, photographer

Human civilization is out of balance with the rest of life. We’re gorging on natural resources without regard to the consequences. But it’s not too late. We can change course. And it starts with sounding an alarm. During the Summer of 2021, hundreds of artists in the U.S. and many other countries will raise a ruckus. We’ve reached a turning point in the development of EXTRACTION ART. We need to advance to the next stage, and we need your help to make that happen. Nothing like EXTRACTION ART has been attempted before: By joining us now, you can add your voice to an international chorus of people who have come together to declare, “Enough!”

WHAT WE NEED

"On behalf of the land and everything living on it, new image wars must be waged."
—Lucy Lippard, art critic, curator, activist

The estimated cost of the next stage is $250,000. Initially we are seeking $50,000—to pay staff and production costs. Here’s the breakdown:

Website. Build a web infrastructure that makes our online presence more interactive and participatory.

Digital newsletter. Convert into an open space for participants to share news, ideas, provocations, and notices of related exhibits and events.

Megazine. Release a massive print publication—a Whole Extraction Catalogue. Distributed at no cost to 10,000 recipients. The Megazine will function as a rehearsal for and preview of the Summer of 2021 ruckus, and it will also serve as a final call for artists and art venues while at the same time launching our publicity campaign, by providing maps and schedules for 2021 EXTRACTION ART interventions, across the U.S. and abroad.

HELP UNLEASH THE POWER OF ART

"Every human being is an artist, called to participate in transforming and reshaping the conditions, thinking, and structures that shape and inform our lives."                       –Joseph Beuys, artist

During a time of growing despair and paralysis, EXTRACTION ART provides a life-affirming alternative. Where there’s art, there’s hope.

Everyone can take action. Whether you’re a creator or a catalyst or both, you can counter the negative news we are awash in every day. Refusing to be a passive spectator is the first step toward transforming the world.

We can’t succeed without the support of people who appreciate the power of art to alter perception, awaken the spirit, and inspire action.
