Help Emily Explore Careers for the Hard of Hearing.

Emily is finishing up her Sophomore year of high school. She has excelled academically and is involved in Cheer Leading, National Honor Society and the Grant Union High School Golf Team, as well as maintaining a part time job. Emily has had profound hearing loss in both ears since birth and started wearing hearing aids before she was six months old. Many people are not aware of her hearing loss because of her indomitable spirit and tenacious approach to life.

We are raising money to help pay for travel expenses for Emily and her mother to travel from Oregon to the Rochester Institute of Technology for two summer programs that will help her investigate career options for people with profound hearing loss. She will be there for nearly two weeks of activities focused on college bound deaf and hard of hearing students. Students will develop an understanding of the technical, professional and liberal arts preparation necessary to be successful in variety of careers. The Rochester Institute of Technology is one of only a handful of schools in the continental United States that is equipped to handle and geared towards educating deaf and hard of hearing students.

Explore Your Future (EYF) is a six day career exploration program. This program focuses on personal growth and career awareness for students as they begin to think about college. EYF is designed to provide important information that will help guide them toward a rewarding career and successful future. The exploration activities promote an understanding of career options and skills required for individuals to succeed in the career area that best matches their interests. She will have hands on experience in following areas: art, business, computer science, engineering, health science, information technology and science.

Health Care Career Exploration Program (HCCEP) is a six day summer program for deaf and hard of hearing college bound students. Emily is very interested in pursuing a career in the health care or medical field, and this program will give her a chance to explore a range of career options and learn about important issues in health care. She will attend medical demonstrations, participate in group activities and discussions, be part of hands on demonstrations in biology, exercise science, medical laboratory science, microbiology, nursing, nutrition, become CPR /First aid certified. The exploration activities promote an understanding of career options and skills required for individuals to succeed in the health sciences career area. The information will help her select a college major.
