Becoming an Iyawó ~ A Year in White
Donation protected
Beloved friends and family,
In 2012, I began a spiritual journey into the teachings of Regla de Ocha (the rules of ocha… the ORISHA). Regla de Ocha is Cuban Santeria that is born from the Yoruba tradition that arrived to the island with enslaved Africans. It is a tradition and a way of life.
The orishas are God’s and Goddesses honored in the tradition. It is a secret and sacred tradition, one that I do not enter into lightly.
I have been saving and planning for this moment since last year and in a few weeks I head to Cuba to officially be initiated in the tradition. It is the highest honor. This moment means more to me than anyone can imagine. There are so many details to tend to, from the clothes I wear, to how I sleep. From the plates I will eat on, to all the studying and reflection I must do in preparation.
Alicia's year in white…
This is what I have been planning for since I started this journey into honoring my ancestors. It is a commitment. A marriage. A death and rebirth.
Today I begin a campaign to not only raise the money necessary to make this dream a reality, but to have as many people in my life who love me play a part in this beautiful ceremony.
What I will use the money for:
*Round trip flights to Havana (through Florida) $200 + $450 = $650
*Fees for food, housing, services, rituals, music, religious officiants = $5000 ($4,050.00 FULLY FUNDED) aché
Please share my campaign and spread the word.
I am so very nervous about this process but also very excited. I am filled with emotion as I get closer to my year in white! This is such a HUGE moment in my life. Thank you for being such an important part of it.
