Evie DeSalvo's Cancer Treatment

Donation protected
Dear friends and family... I have created this page on behalf on my mom, Evie DeSalvo.

Evie's cancer journey began in April of 2012 when she had her first surgery to remove a tumor on her hip. This tumor was a low-grade conventional chondrosarcoma, and no further treatment was recommended. In October of 2016 she had a recurrence in the same area of her pelvis, and she had another surgery. This time the tumor was found to be dedifferentiated (dediff) chondrosarcoma, which is incredibly aggressive. We were told that it was extremely likely the cancer would recur within two years. The strength, bravery, and resiliency Evie exhibited in the face of this scary prognosis was astounding. After countless hours of research and seeking out advice and support from many different sources, she drastically changed her diet and lifestyle, and implemented alternative and complementary therapies into her daily life.

In August of this year, just a couple months shy of the two year mark, she had her second recurrence. While this news was devastating, it is positive that the cancer recurred locally, in the same area of her pelvis where it was the last two times, and it has not spread. We spent the last few weeks meeting with many different doctors and building an amazing medical team. She has decided to move forward with a 6-week course of radiation, followed by surgery. She will begin radiation as soon as possible.

This means that she will need to take about 12 weeks off from both of her jobs. Dr. Jared Smith's dental office and JoAnn Grenard at Home Town Real Estate are both helping financially and holding her jobs, which she is so grateful for. She is also working with a patient navigator and medical social worker to identify and pursue available resources, but even so, the financial burden will be significant. She is a single mom, with her youngest son in 8th grade and living at home with her. The funds that we are raising will go toward helping her cover living expenses during this time, including the cost of gas needed to drive 90 miles/day, 5 days/week, for 6 weeks to get to and from radiation. The funds will also go toward the out of pocket cost of the radiation and surgery.

Even after this round of treatment, doctors have told us that the cancer still has a very high rate or recurrence. Even so, Evie refuses to lose hope. Once she has recovered, she is looking into traveling to some clinics that specialize in treating this rare form of cancer, specifically the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix and the Hoxsey Clinic in Mexico. Once the costs of this treatments are covered, any additional funds may be used to help make this travel possible.

If you know Evie, you know that she has the most compassionate and generous spirit. If she could, she would hand deliver each of you her homemade banana-nut-chocolate-chip bread every single week. She will laugh with you, cry with you, cook with you, and pray for you. She is a helper, a nurturer, and a giver. She is not accustomed to being the recipient of help, but right now, she needs it, so I am asking for her. Your monetary contributions will truly help to ease the financial stress that is accompanying this already difficult time. However, your love and support for my mom mean even more to us, and we appreciate the amazing community that she has more than words can say. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
