EVEREST MED CAMP PROJECT

THE PROJECT

The EVEREST MED CAMP project entails visiting 3 remote mountain villages whose populations have very limited access to medical care. The villages are cut off from all road traffic and are only accessible by foot (about a 2 days walk). The team will set up a medical camp, carry out medical exams, treat wounds, and distribute medicines, eyeglasses and sunglasses. The main focus points will be ophthalmology and women's health and hygiene. Porters will carry medical equipment, medicines and other equipment. The medical camp will be set up in the largest villages of the region. The chiefs of all villages in the region will be informed about 2 months before the arrival of the medical camp, so that the population will know where to meet us.

Nepal has the lowest number of doctors per inhabitants of the South Asian Region. There are only two doctors per 10,000 inhabitants, a figure well below the WHO norm of ten doctors per 10,000 habitants. The situation is particularly dire in isolated mountain villages, which are often a several days’ walk from the nearest clinic or health post. Only those with the financial means and physical ability to undertake such a journey can do so.

THE STORY

Through my work as a volunteer German teacher in Nepal, I met Tshering Lama Sherpa, who later became my partner in this project. Sherpa was my very first student. He not only impressed me with his good German, but also with his career and his life story. Sherpa was extremely lucky to be able to study tourism at the renowned Villa Blanka Institute in Innsbruck, Austria. In part, he was able to do so because his uncle married an Austrian woman, and that aunt was very supportive of his family. Previously, Sherpa worked as a porter, like his father.

After graduating, Sherpa returned to Nepal and founded a trekking company, Lama Reisen. Thanks to his training, his excellent German and English, and especially his knowledge of the culture and needs of European tourists, his business is a success. Sherpa is very grateful for the opportunities he has had, and wants to share his success with the people of his country. He regularly devotes part of his profits and time to aid projects. For such projects, he receives support from European donors, including mountaineering associations and hospitals.

When I learned about Sherpa’s journey, I knew that I had found a reliable partner to help achieve my dream of organizing, financing and creating a project to help those most in need.

A PILOT PROJECT by and for locals

The UniR Association’s first project in cooperation with Tshering Lama Sherpa and Lama Reisen is a pilot project intended to assess the situation and determine if it would be possible to turn the project into an annual endeavor.
One of our project’s strong points is that its organizers and main volunteers are Nepalese. It is a project by and for locals.  All of the medicines and necessary materials will be purchased on site.

WHY SUPPORT US?

By supporting our project, you are helping both people in need and a new association take off in its mission to promote Universal Responsibility, or UniR. You are supporting passionate, involved people, aware of their good fortune in having been born in rich countries that are at peace, with access to drinking water, good social and health systems, good school systems, and freedom of choice in all areas of life. The UniR Association seeks to use the privileges that life has given us to help those who have had less luck.

Since we are a small organisation and this is a small-scale project, we can guarantee that 100% of your donation goes to the people in need.

You will know what happened with your donation

As we are taking part in the project ourselves, we will document it in detail and keep you up to date. Every donor (who wishes to) will receive a full project report in January/February next year, with photos etc.
