On Saturday, March 14, 2015 Evan was taken for an ambulance ride to the ER for symptoms of labored breathing and unresponsiveness. Once admitted there, we found out that Evan's body was going into shock from his pancreas failing to produce insulin.

They flew him by helicopter to Children's Hospital ICU where he recieved care to lower his blood suger levels and get rehydrated. Because his body was no longer producing insulin and the carbohydrates (sugars) were not making it to his cells, his body had been starving and dehydrating itself.

This condition is known as DKA (Diabetic Ketoacidosis).

Evan was diagnosed with Type I Juvenile Onset Diabetes which means that his pancreas no longer produces insulin.

Because his body no longer produces insulin, Evan's blood sugar levels started rising. Insulin helps the sugars/carbs we eat get from the bloodstream, to the cells.

His cells were pulling fluid trying to find the sugar but since they weren't getting it, his body was breaking down fat. When his body was breaking down fat, the pH level of his blood got low (acidic) and since none of the sugars were making it to the cells (cells burn energy), the breakdown of fat started producing ketones.

Because the sugars were staying in his blood, instead of being carried by the insulin to the cells, his blood sugar kept rising. Between the breakdown of fat and the high rising blood sugar levels, his body was starving itself and began going into shock.

There is no known cause for Type I juvenile onset. It wasn't anything he ate or anything like that. Most-likely his body was predisposed for Diabetes or his body started working against itself (autoimmune disorder).

Evan will now have daily insulin injections and blood sugar checks. He will have regular doctor's appointments. And we will have bills from the ambulance, the ER, the helicopter, and Children's Hospital.

We greatly appreciate the support. We are so blessed that Evan is still here with us.
