Dear Friends and Family,
My name is Evan Bruce Schultz and I am writing a letter using a dictation voice control program that I have recently learned. As many of you are aware, on July 15, 2016, I experienced an injury while having fun and playing catch with friends. While playing, I jumped over a grass hedge for a catch, landed poorly, and rolled over and unable to move my arms or legs. When I got to the hospital I found out I had broken my neck at the 5th cervical vertebrae and needed surgery. After surgery and spending sometime at Des Moines Mercy Hospital, I began to have sensation from my chest and shoulder blades up and throughout my arms to my wrists. I could not feel or move my hands, fingers,stomach or legs. After about a week and a half in Mercy ICU I was transferred to Madonna Rehabilitation Facility in Lincoln, Nebraska where I have been for nearly 3 months.
At Madonna I have been getting used to life in a wheelchair and the changes in my body. I’ve spent around six hours a day in physical and occupational therapy, working individually and some with my family to practice and gain skills for living at home in the future. Although I experience similar restrictions in my movements and sensations as when I was first injured, I have gained much in strength and range of motion to try to live as independently as possible. Of course, I have needed so much help. I’ve gotten physical support from friends and family as well as priceless inspirational support from loved ones - personally, by mail, or online. I want to thank you now as I am so very grateful and would not have been able to make such improvements without that support.
One thing I am learning to improve on is asking for assistance. I could sure use a lot of help right now. I plan to leave Madonna on October 19, 2016 and move to Des Moines. My purchase needs before returning include a wheelchair accessible minivan, communicative technologies, restroom and shower equipment, and other uncovered medical bills. The most urgent expense is a new vehicle as we would like to have one purchased asap.
