Mission Statement:  ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada provides instruction at no cost to adult individuals who wish to learn or improve their English language skills, GED preparation, and Citizenship study regardless of sex, age, race, religion or national or ethnic origin, or physical disabilities. ESL In-Home Program empowers people, especially those of low to moderate income, to become more productive members of their local communities by providing them with the language and cultural skills necessary for life in America.

We have over 850 adult immigrants on our wait-list who are anxious to learn English Language Skills. Funds received will start some on the path to education,  better jobs, and financial independence. Possibly even more important, as the parents learn, they will help their young children, thereby diminishing the huge disadvantages faced by children who start school without speaking English - the language in which they are to be instructed.

The photo above shows one of our community volunteer tutors teaching English on a one-to-one basis to her student which helps the student progress faster. Many parents are now helping children with homework, communicating with teachers and medical personnel without interpreters, shopping in English-speaking stores, find jobs, advancing in current employment, attending higher education institutions, becoming U.S. citizens (we have 233 new U.S. Citizens) and more are studying.

A  U.S. Peace Corps motto is:  Help one person and you have done your job!  It costs $80 to purchase the instructional material necessary to teach English language skills to one adult immigrant which will also help his/her family.   As we are a 501(c)3 volunteer nonprofit organization approved by the IRS, your donation is 100% tax deductible to the extent of the law.
Whatever you can donate will be appreciated and would help towards one person experiencing the "American Dream".

The ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada takes pleasure in announcing that our brave and courageous English learners have studied hard to learn their new country's language and customs. They have been tutored by our ESL trained community volunteers with English language skills and are now ready to take the U.S. citizenship exam. The exam is not easy. One hundred questions on American history and government have to be studied, sentences have to be written, and English conversation skills are needed for the interview. We currently have over 80 individuals who have taken our 12-week citizenship study classes and are now ready for the exam. However, not all have the full application fee of $725.

We are proudly honored to announce that an ESL Citizenship Fund bank account is now open for our citizenship students who need funds to apply for citizenship. Tim and Betsy Kosier of Carson City, NV, and Vicki Bailey of Santa Rosa, CA, have together donated a generous amount to start this fund to create a way to help more graduates of the ESL In-Home Program be able to afford to apply for citizenship. Anyone who has saved money for the citizenship exam but does not have the total amount ($725) should apply for assistance with Florence Phillips at ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada, 775-888-2021. We are proud to announce that Northern Nevada has 276 new U.S. Citizens from our program. Three 12-week Citizenship Preparation Study classes are given each year. Our volunteer tutors give freely of their time and energy in conducting U.S.Citizenship Study classes for people who want to become citizens of our country. This semester we have 51 students ready to take the exam but do not have the funds to apply.
When our program first started Citizenship Study classes, the Federal application to become a citizen cost about $300.00. Then it was raised to $680.00. It was again raised to a current cost of $725.00. ( I thought we would welcome new U.S. citizens to our country, so I wonder why the increases occur, which are deterrents.). Some foreign people who want to become a U.S. citizen ask me why they should take the class if they do not have the application fee.
The fee to apply for citizenship is a lot less than the cost of relocating a person. According to Immigration and ICE Deputy Director Kumar Kibble, in 2011 the cost for detaining and relocating an undocumented immigrant back to Mexico cost $12,500. In today's dollars, that figure is more than $13,400. That is the amount that we, the taxpayers of the United States, pay for each and every undocumented person who is sent back to Mexico.

Most immigrants in our program are low-income and do not have enough saved to pay for the application cost even working 2-3 jobs. This is the reason many do not come forward. The ESL In-Home Program of Northern Nevada has started a “for Citizenship” account for funds to help those who do not have the full fee of $725.00.
If you wish to donate, and whatever your donation is, we and the person you are helping will be most appreciative. Donations are 100% tax deductible to the extent of the law. Donations can be sent via our website: www.eslinhome.org/donations. We will send you a bio and photo of the student(s) you have helped.
