I am creating a GoFundMe to help raise funds and also get used musical equipment donations to help put together musical instruments for less privileged kids in our community. Please read below, and reach out as well to donate old used equipment as well! :)
When I was a kid, my family was at a point when we didn’t have extra money for things like musical instruments. I always wanted to play drums and guitar, and would have been happy to play anything I could get my hands on, but I understood that buying these things wouldn’t be an option. Lucky for me, I had a friend who had a beat up old drum kit that his mom bought for $30 used that he wasn’t playing, so he ended up giving it to me when he saw that I was overjoyed to get the chance to play them. They sounded pretty terrible, but I didn’t care - they worked! My friend played guitar also, and this gave us a chance to learn how to play songs together. This changed my life forever, as music has been my passion ever since, thanks to his generosity.
Recently a friend of mine in Austin, TX posted on his Facebook page that he had worked with some musician friends in the community to get donations of spare drums. He got enough to put together a full kit, which was then given to a local child who had wanted to play drums for some time, but whose family could not afford them due to financial struggles. At this point they have been able to get together 5 drum kits total for donation, which is a tremendous success! Everything helps, and it inspired me to do the same for my local community on the central coast of California.
I have a full time job, but for fun over the years I have also learned to repair musical instruments, so even if you have for example a guitar, bass guitar, drums, amplifiers, or any parts/accessories for these sorts of things, anything can be put to use in the longrun to supply instruments to kids who would love the opportunity to have something to learn on. Also, if you have things such as older used drum heads, a snare drum or tom, or an extra set of strings, guitar pickups, or instruments that work but you no longer use in general, these sorts if things can be put to use as I can piece them together with other donations over time to build instruments.
At the end of the day, any help can go a long way. Money raised will 100% be used towards purchasing additional parts and instruments for this cause, and used towards more entry level gear, primarily used equipment, so we will be able to get more instruments in the hands of the kids in our community. Also please reach out if you are in Santa Barbara county or San Luis Obispo county, as I’m located in Santa Maria, CA, and would be willing to drive to pickup donations of parts and/or instruments.
If you are interested in getting involved I would love to hear from you as well! I will post updates regularly as I begin getting donations together, and when these instruments are given to their future owners, so be on the lookout as things progress.
