Escape from the Rock push for 10000

Paraplegic athlete and founder of Stoke for Life Foundation Charles “Chaka” Webb will be taking part in “Escape from the Rock Duathlon” on August 12th, 2017. Escape from the Rock is a 1.6-mile swim from Alcatraz Island to Aquatic Park followed by a 7-mile run from Aquatic Park to Fort Point and back to Aquatic Park. This will be a joint fund-raising effort for two different causes. Charles will compete in the race with Michael Patrick Murtaugh, a longtime friend who initiated this joint fund-raising effort.

Michael and Charles have been friends since the 1987 when they met while both struggling with addiction on the streets of North County San Diego. Charles was injured in 1986 in a motorcycle accident which left him T7-8 paraplegic. At the time Michael was homeless when Charles helped Michael get off the streets in 1987 by giving him place to stay to concentrate on getting sober.

They have been friends ever since cheering each other on in their athletic exploits as Charles is an accomplished adaptive surfer/paddle boarder being the first paraplegic to compete in an open water paddle board race (2013 Battle of the Paddle). Charles is also a two-time West Coast Adaptive Surfing Champion winning the overall points Championship for the WSA in 2014 and 2015. Michael is an accomplished Biathlete that has competed in races for over twelve years in numerous States and now races to raise awareness for addiction and recovery.

Charles will be raising funds for Stoke for Life Foundation, his goal is to raise $10,000 for the very first U.S. Open Adaptive Surfing Championships on October 21-22, 2017 in Oceanside California. This will be the very first all adaptive surfing championship to offer cash and prizes to the top finishers in each division.

Michael will be raising funds for a scholarship to Calvary Healing Center in Phoenix Arizona and his target goal is to raise $19,000. The scholarship is to award one individual the opportunity to go through a full program at Calvary Healing Center. The scholarship will include a five-day detox followed by a thirty-day residential stay at a Calvary Healing Center.

While Charles Webb lives in San Diego running a 501.c3 nonprofit called “Stoke for Life Foundation” which is gear towards adaptive water sports and helping to introduce the benefits of sports like adaptive surfing and adaptive paddle boarding to the disabled community and beyond. Michael Murtaugh has been involved in the hospitality industry for over 30 years. Michael is currently the director of purchasing at the Four Seasons Resort in Scottsdale Arizona.

Charles volunteers for foster youth and speaks at local’s school’s year around. This joint fund-raising effort is another way that these two men can make an impact on the community in the most positive way.

On July 1, 2017 both men will simulate the race in Oceanside California, Michael will swim over a mile out of Oceanside harbor while Charles will pace Michael on his adaptive paddle board. After the swim Michael will pace Charles on a 6-mile run down the coast of Oceanside trying to fit in as many hills as possible.
