Erase School Lunch Debt Centerville

Donation protected
THE STORY:
Many children depend on a nutritious lunch to help them through their school day.  If a student doesn't have the money to pay for their lunch, they collect a debt and sometimes the lunch is thrown in the trash.

RECENT MEDIA COVERAGE:
Lately you may have read in the media about "lunch shaming."

CNN: http://money.cnn.com/2017/05/09/news/economy/school-lunch-shaming-debt-crisis/

Seattle Times: http://www.seattletimes.com/nation-world/children-shamed-so-parents-will-pay-the-school-lunch-bill/

In 2016, the School Nutrition Association published a review of almost 1,000 school-lunch programs, finding that nearly 75 percent of districts had unpaid meal debt.

Paying off the school debt doesn't solve the problem, but it alleviates having to put the children in the middle of the problem and shaming them while a solution is being researched.

It is an awful thing and it should not be happening. Children need to eat regardless if they have money or not.

MORE INFO:

As of May 15, 2017. the total school lunch debt at my elementary school alma mater, Dr. John Hole is $ 48 and the debt at my middle school alma mater, Hadley E. Watts is roughly $17.   My husband and I paid these balances today.

I called Centerville City School District and am working with Nutrition Services to pay off the entire  Centerville City School District debt of approximately $1500.  Any extra money will be put towards next school year's debt.

I am getting this started so we can help the children get the nutritious meals that they need the most!

WHY THIS CAMPAIGN IS PERSONAL:

I reside in Seattle, WA where I serve on the Seattle Public Schools Nutritional Task Force.  I've also written a best seller cookbook on plant based baby recipes (note: most photos are taken at Hidden Valley Farms!).  I'm very aware of the importance of a healthy and balanced meal and the impact it has on a child's behavior and focus at school.   I am dedicated to helping find solutions to improve school policies on nutrition services and look forward to the day that we don't need GoFundMe campaigns for our children's school lunches.  Until then, I'd love to help ease the financial burden for some students!

As a graduate of the Centerville City Schools,  I used to look forward to school lunches each day. I want to make sure these children feel the same!

HOW YOU CAN HELP:
