Librarians Without Borders
Hello!
My name is Sofia De La Mora, I am an MLIS student at the University of Arizona. This year I have been blessed with the opportunity to be a volunteer librarian in Guatemala. This is a trip that Librarians Without Borders organizes every year to help a community have access to information literacy by developing and supporting library collections and providing professional development for teachers. I'm extremely happy to be able to travel to such a beautiful country and help make a difference in a community. I have personally experienced what it is to work with extremely limited resources, to not have access to books and literacy and I am passionate about changing that.
This year the trip will be from April 21st to May 1st. Any donations to help with the travel and program costs will be greatly appreciated. Anything exceeding such costs will be donated to LWB.

A bit more about the program:

LWB uses this annual service trip to execute all our remote work on the ground, to discuss emerging needs with our partners and to re-connect with students and school staff.

This year’s work at the Academy will include ongoing collection management activities (cataloguing, processing, and organizing materials), library programming for students, and training for teachers. LWB works with Asturias to also provide opportunities for trip participants to engage in activities that will help nurture a comprehensive understanding of libraries, education and culture in Guatemala.

Primary Projects

•Cataloging, processing, and adding new items to the library’s collection.
•Library programming targeting all students and levels through multi-day library events.
•Professional development workshops for teachers supporting library integration into the curriculum.

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world". Nelson Mandela

Thank you for helping me make this opportunity a reality!

Guatemala is such a culturally rich country but it has a huge poverty and income inequality problem making it one of the poorest countries in Latin America.
There are definitely many things that need to be addressed, among them, education and huge environmental issues.
Tropical deforestation is one of them, people seem to be caught in a vicious cycle that will end only when environmental degradation reaches its peak. There is great need for conservation actions and it is imperative to grow a conscience among the people in the country about environmental conservation and preservation.
We are committed to teaching the children that we are working with about this situation and what they can do not only to stop the problem but to fix it.
Through books, songs, games and discussions appropriate to each age group, we will address the situation and propose a healthy initiative for the children and families of the community we are serving.

Happy donations day! Just kidding! Happy St Patrick's day everybody. It has already been an excellent morning for me, I have received some awesome donations and you can't imagine how much it helps and how much it means.
This week I have been working on preparing some programs for kids from K-3. I am really excited about this because I know that a positive event during the early years of a child can have a huge impact in their life. I am hoping that these children enjoy learning in such a way that they continue to read and seek knowledge for the rest of their lives.
