E&N PORT SUB TRESTLE RESTORATION

One of the most scenic portions of the (E&N) Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway on Vancouver Island is the Port Alberni Subdivision, between Parksville,British Columbia, and the City of Port Alberni,British Columbia.
Along this section of the railway are several wooden trestles built over 100 years ago by the Canadian Pacific Railway.
Our goal is $15,000,000 Million to raise!
These structures have major historical importance in their design and workmanship during construction.
These trestles will be restored by replacing support timbers, stringers and deck ties for future historical railway service, so heritage steam and diesel trains can operate over this line once again.
The railway line is approx 38 miles in length.
Our most immediate plan for 2018 on the Port Alberni Sub is replacing railway ties along the main line from Parksville Mile 0.1 to mile 13.5 at Cameron Lake. There are approx 2800 ties per mile, we would like to raise enough funds to purchase around 15,000 ties for the first 13.5 miles to replace 1 in 3 ties. Ties are around $50 per tie, and come in bundles of 25 ties.
Our main goal is to raise the funds to get the trestle project started by securing donations to be held in trust, plans are to work with local Regional Districts, Municipal, and Provincial and Federal Governments to get National Heritage Status on all the Trestles, and the rest of the Port Sub for tie replacement.
We will seek funding and grants from private groups also, to help raise the nessasary funds to restore each structure one at a time.
A Railway Bridge Inspector will have to be hired, to do a Inspection on each bridge and trestle to determine what is required and scope of work on each structure to get true costs on repairs!
