Solar Car Team Durango Colorado

$2,890 of $5,000 goal

Raised by 26 people in 19 months
Created January 17, 2018
We are a group of high school students from Animas High School in Durango Colorado. Animas High School's previous team, Energy Audacity, made a solar car and competed with it. We have since inherited the solar car and it needs upgrades, renovating, and building upon. Now our new team is working on reviving the solar car from its current state in hopes to compete in the 2019 Solar Car Challange. The Solar Car Challange this year is a race at texas motor speedway. The race starts on July 12 and ends July 18. Through working on this solar car, we are learning about metalworking, electrical engineering among many other skills. While this is all well and good speculating and dreaming about racing doesn't buy the materials to bring into existence a completed working solar car. Some of the materials that we need to buy include wiring, battery management systems, shock absorbers, and wheels. etc.  Your support and donations in our endeavor to build a solar car to compete at the 2019 Solar Car Challange would be greatly appreciated, and if you would like you can track our progress by following us on Facebook and Instagram, our username is energy_odyssey.

We are at the race! We have made it and are here on our first day. We attended meetings and checked in and are looking forward to scrutineering tomorrow. We do still have many problems with the car including a rear brake failure. We are trying to figure out what the problems are one by one and fix them so the next three days of scrutineering and working on the car. Our team has now dwindled to just three members that we have here at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth Texas. We believe that we can make it through scrutineering but one improvement to the car that would greatly help is a new solar panel. We have the glass on one solar panel that is broken. This does not affect the overall functionality of the car other than decreasing or efficiency at which we procure electricity from the sun. It would be amazing if we could raise funds for this and for us to make other upgrades to our extremely stock heavy car before the race start on the 15 of July.

Dear, Dedicated Sponsors

Due to recent setbacks with the installation and functionality of vital components of the solar car's high voltage motor controller, the Animas High School Solar Car Team - Energy Odessey has decided to postpone participation in the actual race to next year. We believe that due to this setback and the limited funding that we have currently, it would be better to take our time, using the funds we currently have very wisely and make sure we have a successful race next summer in 2019 with a truly well-functioning vehicle.

We are very grateful for your support of our team and just wanted to keep you up to date on our progress and decisions. We are learning so much and gaining our engineering knowledge and team-building skills through this venture.

Postponing until next year will give the time necessary to gather enough funds, and to improve the car's current design. We should be able to get the car's featured improved enough to allow ourselves to be actual contenders in next year's race!

Thank you for all your Support
Sincerely,
The Animas High School Solar Car Team Energy Odyssey
