Celtic Fans - Medical Aid to Gaza

Donation protected
Today marks the 70th year of the Nakba, the catastrophe in 1948 where Palestinians were killed, systematically exiled and their communities destroyed. Today in 2018 unarmed Palestinian civilians are being brutally murdered by Israeli military forces. The Palestinian Ministry of Health has confirmed that yesterday, in one day, 60 people were killed, the vast majority young people, and over 2,771 people were injured, at least 203 of those injured are children. Leila al-Ghandour, an eight month old baby is the youngest victim and eight children under the age of 16 have been killed.

Since March 30th Palestinians have been taking part in the Great March of Return in defence of their rights and in defiance to the continued suffering across Palestine under military occupation and the devastating siege of Gaza. Hospitals, paramedics, doctors and medical staff are completely overwhelmed by the amount of casualties; equipment and resources are limited and the medical situation in Gaza is becoming increasingly desperate. This campaign, organised by Celtic Fans for Palestine, is to raise necessary funds for two charities supporting hospitals and healthcare in Palestine: Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) provide access to essential health services and build local knowledge and skills to address local health problems, as well as responding to humanitarian emergencies due to occupation, displacement and conflict.

Glasgow/Bethlehem Palestinian Cancer Nursing Project: the impact of military occupation across Palestine and the siege in Gaza has a terrible impact on Palestinians diagnosed with cancer. Institutions in Glasgow and its twinned city of Bethlehem, alongside MAP, have worked to develop cancer nurse education in Palestine, culminating in the development of the first cancer/palliative care nurse diploma at Bethlehem University. Nurses from the West Bank and Gaza enrolled in the diploma are offered opportunities to have clinical placements in Glasgow and other UK based cancer centres. The clinical skills learned by the nurses is making a positive impact on cancer care in Palestine, improving the lives of patients’ and their families.

Celtic fans have always spoken out against the injustice Palestinians have endured. It is in that vein that we again condemn the complete disregard for and violation of international law and human rights by the Israeli state and military. We as a support stand with Palestinians and condemn the continued suffering they face under military occupation and siege.

Celtic Fans for Palestine are a group of individual Celtic fans based in Glasgow who raise awareness about the situation Palestinians face and fundraise for charitable projects in Palestine. We personally know the two coordinators of both projects. Last summer we met with the cancer nurses enrolled in the first cancer/palliative care nurse diploma during their visit to Glasgow and have been involved in different activities and events organised by the Glasgow/Bethlehem Palestinian Cancer Nursing Project.

The funds from this campaign will be split between both projects: 40% will go towards medical aid and equipment for hospitals and medical centres in Gaza through MAP; and 60% will go towards training and education for nurses enrolled in the cancer/palliative care nurse diploma. The funds will be directly transferred from gofundme into the respective projects’ accounts, ensuring there are no delays in the funds being used.

We have gone beyond our target and want to share our sincere thanks and gratitude to all those individuals who donated to the campaign and to the Celtic Fans who continue to show their support for the people of Palestine.
