EMS Scholarship for Blinn College

Tax deductible

The Blinn College EMS Program is committed to serving our community by training and producing competent entry-level EMS providers. The EMT program involves one semester of study and clinical rotations in the emergency room, labor and delivery, and field rotations on an ambulance. The program costs can be considerable, especially for students who do not have access to outside financial assistance. The cost of attending the EMT program can approach 2,000.00, which includes: tuition for 7 credit hours (EMSP 1501 & EMSP 1260), books and supplemental software, uniforms, vaccinations, and clinical screening.

Statements from the Scholarship founders –

“Exactly a year ago I had the incredible opportunity to take the EMS certification course at Blinn College. For me, this certification would be a way to get more hands on experience in a field that I plan to further pursue by going to medical school, however for the overwhelming majority of my class, this was the certification that would start their career as an EMT. Putting the cost of this class into perspective, I realized that it was a small investment for an incredibly high return in a multitude of ways. Many in the class struggled to pay for this investment, thus this idea was born. What if a recent high school graduate who worked hard, was interested in science and serving their community could actually take a class that would lead them to a wonderful career without having to worry about the cost?” – Sarah Eaves, EMT Program Graduate and Scholarship founder

“As a teacher and mentor, I love what I do. Every semester I see students struggling to be successful in the EMT course at the same time as working an outside job.  When I consider what makes a student successful, multiple variables need to be considered. Students are successful as a result of hard work and dedication, but if they don’t have their basic needs met it is difficult to focus on higher learning. A student that doesn’t have to worry how they will pay for their books, uniforms, shot records, and other expenses is a student that is more likely to be successful.”  - Kimberley Decker, EMS Program Faculty

This scholarship will be awarded to two students each semester (as long as the scholarship fund supports this award) who will enroll in the EMT program. Students must be 18 years or older at the time of the course completion, demonstrate financial need and an interest in the medical field. Students will need to submit an application, transcripts, a personal statement of financial need, a personal statement of interest in community service and the medical field, and one letter of recommendation, and will be selected by a committee including Ms. Eaves and Mrs. Decker.
