Emmylou Needs You!

The Pup (@emmyloulake )

Emmylou (other known aliases: Emmy, Emmers, Skremmer, Skrems, Skremitar, Skrem Brulee, The Skrematiphore, Moose, Moosasaurus, Little Moose, Lou lou Bean, My Sweet Potato Pup):

Is a two-and-a-half year old mixed breed wonderdog. Emmylou did not have the easiest beginning. She came into my life as a little, ten-week-old fighter suffering from Canine Parvovirus. She was supposed to be vaccinated, clearly was not, and her little life was almost over before it ever really began.

Thankfully, after a lot of love, money, and 24-hour vet care she made through that initial hurdle and is now 115 pounds of snuggable.

She’s also an adventurer. A warrior. My protector from raccoons and garbage trucks. She’d hurl herself into the blades of a helicopter if she thought it would save me. And once, atop Soutfork Mountain, when a helicopter landed near our backcountry lake, I thought she might just try and do that very thing. She was not about to trust this weird, noisy, whirling beast with her dad.

Emmylou and I have had many an adventure, from finding opossums and snapping turtles and hundreds of bald eagles in and around Lincoln, Nebraska, to fly fishing prairie rivers, eastern slopes streams, and mountaintop lakes across the west. We've been pricked by cacti, covered in burs, and caught in summer downpours. We've compared icy snowbeards. She chased a flock of bighorn sheep along Alberta’s Oldman River on her second birthday. She’s got personality, I tell you.

But most of all, Emmylou is the best friend I could ask for. She’s an amazing road trip partner. She’s loving, fiercely loyal, a good listener, and is often the only thing that gets me through the day. She’s stubborn, hard-headed (like yours truly), and a goofball. After a long day of teaching and researching, there is nothing better than having her greet me at the door.

The Issue

Sadly, her adventuring has come to a halt as of late. Emmylou has injured the CCL, a ligament in the leg similar to the ACL in a human’s knee, in both of her back legs and will need cruciate/stifle surgery on one of them. The other leg is holding up well for now, but there is always a possibility she could need surgery on the other leg in the future as well.

After recovery from the surgery, Emmylou should be fine, and will be back to her wild, adventurous self in around six months. However, the surgery is expensive and the post-surgery attention and care necessary is significant. Because she is such a young dog, cheaper alternatives such as bracing are not viable and risk creating more long-term complications. She deserves a full, comfortable, fun-filled life.

Her Human

I am a doctoral student in English Literary and Cultural Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. As a grad student, I do not have the financial flexibility to absorb such a large, unexpected expense. I am also an international student from Canada studying in the United States, so I cannot legally take on extra work to try and make up the funds (not that that would be a very doable solution with my current schedule and workload anyway). I love my Emmylou, and I wish it was as easy as hurling myself at a helicopter to make her leg better.

The Ask

Currently, I have spent approximately $600 in vet visits for X-Rays, palpation exams, and anti-inflammatory medications, and the estimated cost of the surgery is $2200-2300. There are bound to be other costs as well, however, my main goal is simply to get Emmylou the surgical care she needs without going further into debilitating debt. For that reason, I am setting the goal at $3000 which should cover the cost of diagnosis and surgery.

The procedure is booked for February 26, 2019.

I am reaching out to you, human-to-human, pet lover-to-pet lover, friend, family, acquaintance, stranger, whatever, to help Emmylou and I cope with this necessary and unexpected surgery. No donation is too small, every dollar counts, and I will be eternally grateful. I love this dog so much.

Thank you. You can follow Emmylou's adventures @emmyloulake on Instagram.
