Elkhorn City Railroad Museum

The Elkhorn City Area Heritage Council was founded in 1999, with the goal of preserving our local heritage and history. One of the things we do is maintain and operate the Elkhorn City Railroad Museum.

  We opened up the Museum one spring morning and were met with water soaked floors, dripping ceilings, and heavy, black mold over everything. It seems that a supply line to the toilet had ruptured and a steady stream of water had been gushing for several days, probably up to two weeks. In fact, according to city water records, over 300,000 gallons of water were metered during that time. That’s enough to fill a swimming pool 40’x100’x10’ deep.



  Even with all the water in the building, the major damage was caused by the resulting mold. Black mold had covered everything in the back two rooms….floors, walls, ceilings, and contents. Of course, almost everything from those two rooms was ruined, except for a few metal items which will be cleaned.

  We are a small organization with limited funds, and we have already spent all we had in savings. The inital cleanup by ServPro cost us over $5,000. We are now in need of additional funds to purchase materials and finish the repairs of our museum.



We will be spending the money we raise on;
- Lumber to repair and replace most of the floor inside
- Lumber and drywall for interior repairs
- Cleaning and repair of some of the items we had on display
- Miscellaneous cost associated with saving the museum.
