Help Liz Catch Up On Bills

My name is Elizabeth Campbell. I write books under my maiden name Elizabeth Barone, but most people call me Liz. In 2007 I began experiencing debilitating joint pain, fatigue, and other symptoms. After lots of testing, my doctors determined that it was some kind of autoimmune disease—meaning my body is attacking itself—but they couldn't figure out what or why. As of 2016, my rheumatologist has determined that it may be Lupus caused by the mono I had as a teenager, and is monitoring me closely.

For the most part, I've tried to carry on living my life. Unfortunately, I'm unable to work a "normal" job. I went from working a full-time dream job as a web designer to part-time in retail, but over the years I've been less and less able to meet the demands of the workforce. After a particularly bad flareup in 2014, my husband and I decided that I would work from home and pursue writing full-time. Even though my husband Mike works full-time, it isn't enough. His hours are often cut and, although he's been looking, he hasn't been able to find a better-paying job. We are falling more and more behind on bills. Just as we thought it couldn't get worse, this month our rent went up.

Since we only have one vehicle and are not on or close to a bus route, I couldn't return to work even if I was physically able. We are frustrated and very worried about our situation.

I've always been a go-getter, so I sat down and came up with some author services that I could offer. I've been self-publishing for five years—one of which was spent with a small press—so I have a lot of experience in the indie publishing industry, and have a lot to offer other authors. Recently a friend, @thebookavid, DMed me on Twitter and suggested I set up a GoFundMe with these services.

I'm also offering fun rewards for non-authors, such as signed paperbacks, ebook copies of my entire library, and more! Both @MissMolliWrites and @jcahannigan have graciously donated ebook copies of their books as rewards, too.

My goal is to raise enough with these services to cover our rent and utilities, that way with Mike's regular income we can start to pull ahead. The sooner I can start raising money, the better, as we have several bills due by the end of the month and our increased rent due at the beginning of November.

Any additional funds raised will be put toward future bills.

Words cannot express how much your help means to us. We are a young couple and love our life together, but have fallen on hard times. A hand up will not only help us continue living in the cute little country apartment that we love so much, but will also lift our spirits and help us focus on more fun things (like writing gritty romance and painting zombies).

Catching up on bills will also relieve stress, which will help me recover faster from my current flareup. Your help will literally get me back on my feet, as I've been laid up on the couch and hobbling around our apartment with my cane.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you so very much.

Hello everyone! I just wanted to send you all a quick note to let you know that A) I'm okay and B) I've fallen a bit behind again because my neck and back have not been cooperating.

So, if I owe you a prize, email, or something else, please know that I'm not ignoring you. I'm just trying to limit my computer time so that the swelling in my darn neck joint goes down. (The more I stare at the screen, the more my neck and back joints get inflamed and angry.) I apologize for the delay but I really have to take a time out and rest—as much as I'd prefer not to, because I'd rather be working. Siiiigh.

Thank you so much for your support and understanding! Have a fantastic weekend.

PS: I have some good news! THE NANNY WITH THE SKULL TATTOOS has been featured in the Nook store and is a best seller in that featured category, which is pretty cool. And, in other good news, I've found a part-time job writing freelance copy! So things really are looking up for us, and I can't thank you all enough for your help and cheering. Have a great weekend!

Hello everyone! I haven't updated in a bit; I've been fighting off this flareup of my autoimmune disease and trying to rest as much as possible. Unfortunately, that's meant limiting computer use. :(

Fortunately, I have some good news!

On December 1st, I had a followup appointment with my rheumatologist. Though he's still hesitant to diagnose me because he feels my labs are inconclusive, he's started me on Prednisone (a steroid) and Plaquenil (a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug, or DMARD). Prednisone has kicked flareups for me in the past and, I daresay, is already helping my morning stiffness. I actually took a shower first thing this morning and did a little victory dance. Of course, it could be coincidence; sometimes during flareups I'll have a random day of feeling a little better. But I'm hopeful the Prednisone is doing its job.

The Plaquenil, however, will take up to six months to work. But it should make my immune system behave and, hopefully, give me some of my life back. I'm not planning on running any marathons, but I'm very hopeful. You can read more details on my blog (

In book-related news, I'll be releasing a JUST ONE MORE MINUTE Christmas novelette on Monday, December 12th called "Just One More Christmas." Those who are signed up for my email newsletter will get it for FREE; if you'd like to get a free copy, you can join my email newsletter here: If you prefer to purchase a copy, it will be only $0.99. I know some folks like to support everything I release, and I really appreciate that.

My newsletter is at no cost to you and I don't spam; I will, however, send you goodies and monthly news about my books.

If you've donated recently, I will be contacting you shortly to coordinate rewards. I'll also be checking messages to send out any pending prizes. I really appreciate your patience. I wish I could respond faster, but my wrists don't often feel like being wrists. Boo to that, I say! :P I have to be silly. My Popi was always goofy, even in the toughest of times. Laughter has always carried me through when life gets sassy.

Thank you again for your generosity. I truly cannot express how very much your help means to my husband and I. We're feeling so much more hopeful and so much less stressed now that we are beginning to catch up. We still have a ways to go—including outstanding car taxes, eek—but we are making progress.

Speaking of progress... Mike sold another painting! He sold one of his Ghostbusters set. It will be on its way to its new home soon. My latest novel, JUST ONE MORE MINUTE continues to sell. Things have slowed down now that it's been out a few weeks, but they're still moving—which is always a good thing! I expect the needle to move forward again once I release the Christmas novelette.

I've also started copywriting for Textbroker. I'm just waiting for them to receive my W-9. It's not steady work, and the pay is really low, but it's something!

I'm really optimistic about our future, and much of that is thanks to you, your help, and your support. So thank you again.

Warm holiday wishes to you and yours,
Liz and Mike

Hello everyone! I meant to update sooner but life, health, family, etc have kept me very busy. First of all THANK YOU SO MUCH for your donations. We're now able to pay several bills this month, including electricity (which is also our heating), so I truly appreciate your help.

Mike recently got another interview for a better job opportunity but unfortunately the position was filled. We're upset because A) he really wanted to be out of his current position before the holidays so he could spend time with family and B) he really wanted to be out of there ASAP so that we could better afford our bills. It's super frustrating but we keep on keeping on.

In good news, Mike has partnered with several other local artists in putting out a magazine to grow the art community in CT. The first volume sold out of its first print run incredibly fast, so we're hopeful that it will continue to do well and provide us another stream of income.

Also, I'm seeing my rheumatologist in a couple weeks to continue monitoring my blood work and to evaluate whether I'm a candidate for Plaquenil, a medication for autoimmune diseases but primarily Lupus. I think Lupus is still what my rheumatologist is looking at, but I'll know better when I see him on December 1st. This is great news, as it could get me feeling better. Unfortunately I'm definitely in a flareup, so I've been resting as much as possible.

However, I'm doing proofreading for the magazine I mentioned above. I wanted to help out anyway but if it makes enough, it'll be another stream of income for me! I'm also talking with a publisher about having them take over my print rights, which means they'll distribute paperback copies of my books. This will enable me to do signings in my state (and even branch out), which will provide another stream of income.

I've also applied for a telecommuting job, proofing ads. From what other employees say, it takes a while for them to get back to you if they're interested. I haven't heard anything yet either way, so my fingers are crossed. The contract is only for a year, but it would be a huge help.

And, of course, I have a new release this week! I'm working hard to promote it and my fingers and toes are crossed that it does well.

I'm sending thank yous to everyone who's donated recently now; if I owe you a reward, please check your email. It'll come through the GoFundMe site. If you don't hear from me for whatever reason, please email me at so I can get your goodies to you. I'm amazed by everyone's generosity and appreciate it beyond words, so if there's anything I can do for you in exchange, I'm really happy to. The rewards are on my GoFundMe page (

Thank you again! :)

We still have a ways to go, but this is a great start and I am so grateful for your help.
