Hello!

This summer, I have the unique opportunity to study and create at the Ionian Institute of Arts and Culture on the island of Kefalonia in Greece for the Master Class in Art & Technology with Craig Dongoski. Every summer, artists from Atlanta and beyond have taken their talents to Kefalonia, through large mural work, musical experimentation, and other mediums, learning from masters on the Island and sharing their craft with the residents there.

This will be the first time in this particular program that someone in the theatre concentration has gone- and appropriately as the theme this year is centered around Greek Tragedy. Below is my proposal for how to spend my time on the island. I want to learn and listen to the land and create something that respects and showcases the beautiful culture of Greece and its role in modern theatre.

My proposal:

"..Ideally, I would love to create, produce, and direct a performance piece utilizing text, music, dance, and space retelling a traditional story specific to Kefalonia. I know that there is a theatre on the island, but I am also open to creating a roaming performance or using an unconventional or natural location. I would love to collaborate with other artists, both local and from the program, and open the performance to the public for free. I imagine one large opening and celebration.

I am aware that the focus of this year is Greek tragedy, specifically Aeschylus’ ‘Eumenides’, so I would also like to incorporate traditional Greek performance motifs such as mask work and the use of a chorus, perhaps also incorporating or showcasing the story of ‘Eumenides’ itself. I also like the idea of marrying the performance with a sort-or Dionysian feast, working with the farm to potentially curate a community dinner."

I am very very close to actually raising enough funding to go (and continue to pay my bills while I'm gone), but it's definitely what will keep me from going. If I had paintings, I would sell them- but my work is performative and experiential. Experiences like this help me to hone my craft and learn so that I can continue to engage the Atlanta art community.
