Ekata Theatre in London!

Hello!
I am Erika Eva, founder and artistic director of Ekata Theatre. I started Ekata to create powerful physical performance across national and social borders. Ekata's recent shows include Unbelonger, a devised piece about coping with discrimination; On Monday Last Week, an adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's short story; and Tämä Tavallinen Tarina, a physical piece based on a Finnish poetry collection dealing with self image.
My newest project is called On Mother's Day. It is an ensemble piece centred around an inmate on death row, Ramón. He goes over his memories while sitting in his cell awaiting his punishment. The piece is portrayed by physical ensemble work, handheld lights, and a specially composed soundtrack. Ramón's story is based on seven years of real conversations with prisoners on death row through the humanitarian organisation Human Writes. Although fictional, Ramón's life is the life of many who currently face the death penalty. I believe his story needs to be told in order to challenge the dehumanisation of people behind bars. It is a protest against the atrocity of capital punishment, and a way to bring compassion to an emotionless system.
On Mother's Day will be shown in a prestigious venue in London, The Cockpit, over four days as part of the Camden Fringe – a month-long performance festival that takes place every August. The Cockpit is the biggest venue Ekata will have played to, and this comes with its own costs and risks. It also brings big benefits as we are able to reach more people on this important theme.
This is why I'm asking for your help.
We have a powerful story to tell and now you have a chance to be part of it. If you're not in London but like our work or like the sound of On Mother's Day, please consider contributing something to help make the work a success. You will be helping to make sure as many people as possible can see our work, and you will be helping to raise awareness of this human rights violation.
We at Ekata aim to make changemaking theatre independently so we can talk freely, but it’s also difficult because we don’t have big financial support behind us. Therefore we ask you to contribute by giving a small donation so we can make great theatre together!
The word 'ekata' means 'unity' in Sanskrit. I created Ekata Theatre to make challenging, relatable and relevant work. I'm very excited to have the opportunity to make this piece in London and I hope that, with your support, we can make it work for everyone. Olen Erika Eva, Ekata Teatterin perustaja ja taiteellinen johtaja. Perustin Ekatan luomaan vahvaa fyysistä teatteria läpi kansallisten ja sosiaalisten rajojen. Ekatan viimeisimpiä teoksia ovat Unbelonger, devising-tekniikalla luotu esitys syrjimisestä selviämisestä, On Monday Last Week, adaptaatio Chimamanda Ngozi Adichien novellista; sekä Tämä Tavallinen Tarina, fyysinen teos pohjautuen Kesken-runotrilogiaan itsensä hyväksymisestä.
Uusin teoksemme, On Mother’s Day, on ensemble teos, joka sijoittuu kuolemaantuomitun selliin. Näytelmää sanoittaa sellissään istuva Ramón, joka käy läpi muistojaan ja odottaa tuomionsa täytäntöönpanoa. Teatteriesitys toteutetaan fyysisen teatterin keinoin, käsivaloin sekä näytelmää varten sävelletyn musiikin rytmittämänä. Ramónin tarina pohjautuu yli seitsemän vuoden kirjeenvaihtoon kuolemaantuomittujen vankien kanssa yhteistyössä kansalaisjärjestö Human Writes in kanssa. Vaikka tarina on fiktiota, Ramónin elämä heijastaa monen kuolemaantuomitun kokemusta. Uskon, että tämä tarina tulee kertoa, jotta voimme haastaa vankeihin kohdistuvaa dehumanisaatiota. Se on protesti kuolemaantuomion epähumaaniutta vastaan ja toive tuoda myötätuntoa kylmään järjestelmään.
On Mother’s Day näytetään arvostetussa The Cockpit -teatterissa Lontoossa neljänä päivänä osana The Camden Fringe teatterifestivaalia. Me haluamme tehdä muutosta tuovaa teatteria itsenäisesti, mikä tarkoittaa, että voimme puhua vapaasti mutta myös sitä, että meillä ei ole suurta taloudellista tukea takanamme. Siksi pyydämme tukea pienen lahjoituksen muodossa, jotta voimme tehdä mieleenpainuvaa teatteria yhdessä.
