Improvement in academic performance

Donation protected
Education gives hope for teens. Earning a high school diploma impacts the student and role models to younger siblings and other youth that it is important to succeed academically. HOPE creates a pipeline for success. The consistency in programming ensures our teens thrive, and guides them towards success. The social change lies in the fact teens are learning healthy habits for academic and career success.

Thanks to your past generosity to Educate Youth, in summer of 2017 six teens received their high school diplomas. Earning a high school diploma not only impacts the student, but it role models to younger siblings and the other youth in the community that it is important to succeed academically. On behalf of the graduates, we thank you for helping them learn they are intelligent and capable of learning.

In the past we helped Anthony, an 8t h grader, with English. His teacher walked out of class several weeks ago. Since that time, these students have had long term and short-term substitutes. While he
was at the clubhouse, we created grade appropriate activities and
had him read books. During the time he was at the clubhouse, he completed his homework, learned and practiced required soft skills, and saved money. Today, he is a high school graduate attending EMU.

Education gives new hope to teens. Educate Youth is launching our 2017 Year-End Campaign. Our goal is to raise $5,000 by December 31st.
This amount will provide services for 10 teens for the spring semester to help them up to grade level. Your contribution can help create a lasting impact in the academic lives of teens living in Ypsilanti.

Please consider making a special year-end donation of
$50, $100, or whatever you can afford to help us meet our goal. We have enclosed a donor envelope or if you prefer you can donate through a secure PayPal or at educateyouthypsi.org

Thank you for your continued support and friendship. With gratitude,

Gail Wolkoff

Thank you for all the support and kindness over the past few months. Here are a few highlights:

1. Four Ypsilanti High School students are soon to be alums~ Three years ago, we each came to the clubhouse under credit requirement. Through hard work and commitment each is graduating June 13.

2. Each student who took our SAT preparation classes scored ABOVE the state and the Ypsilanti Community School average.

3. Partnering with Mosaic Ypsi, there are three sets of wings in the Colette Miller style. Joe LaVigne painted the wings at the clubhouse.

The starting of Educate Youth spans many years. In June 2011, I began looking for academic opportunities for the adolescents living in the City of Ypsilanti. To my amazement, there were no academic-based programs; many of the programs were sports-based or had a large acceptance fee.

We decided to start our own program that was specifically designed for middle school students. We met at the library for four weeks during the summer, doing academics four days a week, and leaving one day for community service. We always met for four hours a day. The program was free of charge, transportation was provided, and participants were given basics in academics, soft skills, and positive group interactions.

What did we learn? All the students wanted to continue this program during the school year This was the beginning of Having Opportunities for Positive Education, H.O.P.E., one of the four programs being moved to Educate Youth.

All of our programs are created by youth, for their peers. Our mission has remained consistent: to connect youth with the world to promote peace, greater understanding, and a love of learning. All the programs, S.A.T. Preparation, Prevent and Prevail : an Open exchange of ideas about Sex, Empowerment, Drugs, and Prevention for STDs and HIV, Ethics Bowl , and H.O.P.E . are moving from Dedicated to Make a Change to Educate Youth 501c3.

Educate Youth 501c3 is being started because we want to make a difference in the lives of Ypsilanti youth. It is a chance for the community to provide the needed sources of funding for the youth programs that change lives. Educate Youth 501c3 is the evolution and culmination of Dedicated to Make a Change’s youth-centered educational programs into a single, independent entity. Here in Ypsilanti, Educate Youth serves teens from underfunded schools, where students are not receiving an adequate education. Our focus is to give youth the tools to thrive in an academic environment, function effectively in the workforce, and to develop skills for positive interactions with others. Educate Youth is a job for the program's participants.

For 1 hour of work, a student makes $8.  Students typically work a 10 hour week. This is on top of going to school 35 hours/week.
For the tutors, it takes $12 to pay them by the hour.
By donating, you are ensuring the financial future of both a current professional worker, and a future leader in our community.
