WMP Heritage - Educate through Engagement

Donation protected
We are trying to convert the old Lock-up on Steelhouse Lane, Birmingham, into the new West Midlands Police Museum.

Through setting the museum up in such a large and accessible location we can deliver an ambitious engagement programme to educate young people about local history and police heritage, as well as deliver significant policing messages on topics such as knife crime, road safety, drugs and online safety.

The West Midlands Police heritage collection contains some fascinating stories and unique items going back to the days before formal policing in the early 1800s and should be enjoyed by everyone and inspire the next generation of recruits. Our plan for the future museum would involve several open days a week, regular history talks, several school visits a week, opportunities for private group visits and events and make the museum more accessible than previously possible.

We have a huge collection of prisoner photographs going back to 1853, police officers records going back to 1839 and incredible tales of bravery, heroism and sacrifice throughout the decades, not to mention rare medals, badges and helmet plates, a significant uniform collection and examples of changing kit and equipment spanning over 150 years.

We are mid-way through a Heritage Lottery application to generate the majority of funding required to convert the Lock-up and set the museum up in a new permanent home, however there is a shortfall in the matched funding contributions to pay for the building works, new displays and materials. We are looking for the support of the public and organisations to make this fantastic ambition a reality and enable us to preserve our history and use it to educate and inform, mixing heritage with current vital policing messages to help keep the next generation safe.

We are pleased to be able to offer the following rewards for supporters of the project:

Bronze package – a £100 donation will get you 2 x tickets to a limited availability pre-launch open day.

Silver package – a £250 donation will get you 2 x tickets to a special ‘Unlocking the Lock-Up’ event to visit the completed museum where the building’s secrets will be revealed. A free programme is included for each attendee.

Gold package – a £500 donation will get you 2 x tickets to attend an exclusive behind-the-scenes ‘hard hat tour’ of the museum to see the building works in progress and see the plans for the building coming to life.
