My name is Erica Joy Gonzalez and on January 16, 2018, my parents, Edel and Sulema Gonzalez,  tragically died from carbon monoxide poisoning while away on vacation.  The struggle to accept such a horrendous and sudden loss has been very challenging for my brother, myself and our family. On a daily basis we are consumed with the how and why of these happenings,  constantly thinking about how this could have been prevented.  Knowing that the property they stayed at did not have a proper carbon monoxide detector intensifies the heartache and void we feel. Due to an ineffective device and negligence, my healthy, loving and vibrant parents were robbed of spending their "golden years" with their family, friends and beloved grandchildren.

Today, a year later, the pain and void remains the same as we continue to struggle emotionally with the loss of our parents.  As a result, we have decided to create a GoFundMe account in order to raise money to educate and build awareness about the dangers of carbon monoxide and ways to prevent these occurances when away from home.

Passaic was always close and dear to my parents' hearts.  Together they grew up and established their careers in this city.  My mother, well respected  bilingual educator for the Passaic School District and my father, a real estate investor, loved this city and always wanted to make it better.  As a result, I feel Passaic is a great place to establish this memorial for them.  By teaming up with the Non Profit Organization Certified Angels and various Fire Departments, we will use the funds raised to educate children and their families about the dangers of carbon monoxide.  Additionally, we hope to provide every attendee with a portable carbon monoxide detector.

Portable carbon monoxide detectors are battery operated and can be placed anywhere in your home.  Additionally, they are small enough to take with you when traveling.  If I had one wish, it would be that my parents had known about this device and had traveled with it everywhere they went.  If this had been the case, I believe they would still be with us today and my heart would be complete.

This GoFundMe in memory of my parents will begin January 16th, the day they passed away, and will close on February 3rd, the day of their wake.

Please share this page so that you too can promote awareness and hopefully prevent this from happening to someone else.  Once the goal of this year's fundraiser has been met, we hope to hold one annually in an attempt to expand  the "EdiSue Memorial".

Thank you in advance for sharing and helping us heal.  God Bless you and your family.
