„EDGES, A SONG CYCLE” – Ein musikalisches Studentenprojekt

Hi! Ich bin Marion und ein Musiktheaternerd. Gemeinsam mit anderen Musiktheaternerds an der Uni Bielefeld inszeniere ich „EDGES“, einen Song Cycle von Benj Pasek und Justin Paul. Er handelt von Erwachsen werden, Selbstfindung und in Hosentaschen vergessenen Hamster.
Aber Marion, was ist ein Song Cycle? Eine gute Frage. Man könnte sagen, ein Musical ohne Plot und ohne feste Rollen, oder aber ein Konzert mit übergreifendem Thema und Theaterliedern. Jedes Lied ist eine Geschichte für sich. Dadurch kann „EDGES“ sich den Problemen des Erwachsen werdens aus vielen verschiedenen Perspektiven nähern. Ob es um scheiternde Liebesbeziehungen, Träume und Zukunftsängste oder besagtes Nagetier geht – jedes Lied findet einen neuen Zugang.
Aber nicht nur der großartigen Geschichten von unterforderten Pizzaboten und überforderten Vätern wegen haben wir uns „EDGES“ verschrieben, sondern auch weil diese Form des kleinen Musiktheaters in Europa kaum bekannt ist. Im Gegensatz zu Amerika, wo das neue Format des Song Cycles schon Verbreitung gefunden hat, wird in Europa der Begriff „Musical“ fast ausschließlich mit Megaproduktionen wie „Das Phantom der Oper“ verbunden. Wir wollen zeigen, dass es noch viel mehr in der zeitgenössischen Musiktheaterszene gibt, und helfen, das Genre weiterzuentwickeln.
Denn das ist das Großartige an „EDGES“ – es lässt Spielraum für eigene Kreativität, ohne die Möglichkeiten unseres studentischen Rahmens zu sprengen.
Natürlich haben wir zunächst die Bühnenrechte erworben, damit auch alles mit rechten Dingen von sich geht. Wir finanzieren sie durch Straßenmusik, Unterstützung seitens der Uni und den Klassiker Waffelstand. Über die Hälfte der Kosten sind dadurch gedeckt, aber was uns jetzt noch fehlt, sind die letzten 300 €. Und hier kommst du ins Spiel: Du magst Musicals, Musik oder einfach Menschen mit Ideen? Dann unterstütz uns mit einer Spende in beliebiger Höhe und hilf „EDGES“ auf die Bühne!

EDGES, A SONG CYCLE – A STUDENT PROJECT
Hi! I’m Marion and a musical theatre freak. Together with a bunch of other musical theatre freaks here at Bielefeld University I’m staging EDGES, a song cycle by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. It’s about coming of age, finding yourself and forgetting hamsters in trouser pockets.
But Marion, what on earth is a song cycle? I’m glad you asked. A song cycle is a musical without a plot and without a set-in-stone cast of characters. In other words: It’s a concert with an overall theme and theatre songs. Each song tells its own story. That’s why EDGES can examine the problems of coming of age from a wide range of various perspectives. Whether it’s about fading and failing love, about dreams and fears or about aforementioned rodent – each song offers a new and original approach.
But our devotion to EDGES does not only spring from its marvellous stories of frazzled future fathers and bedazzling pizza delivery guys, but also from its unusual format. Whereas the song cycle as a form of the musical has already found an audience in the US, in Europe it’s still unknown. “Musical” does ring a bell, but mostly that of mega productions like The Phantom of the Opera. We want to show you that there’s more to the contemporary musical scene. We want to be part of it and help it develop. Because that is what’s so amazing about EDGES – it allows us to be creative in our own way and still is a realizable student project.
So, what can you do? You can help us pay for the stage rights. We already financed more than half of the costs through street music, support from Bielefeld University and waffles sales. What’s still missing are the last 300€. So if you feel like EDGES is worthy your aesthetical as well as your pecuniary attention, don’t hesitate! Donate a sum of your choice and help EDGES going on stage!
