ECHOING HILLS GHANA

“Creating opportunities for individuals with disabilities to know and experience Jesus Christ.”

-Olivia (5 years old)
Echoing Hills Village, Ghana, is a non-profit organization located in West Africa. It ministers to those who are blind, deaf, disabled, or homeless within the local community. Echoing Hills was established in 1994 by Reverend Cordell Brown. He began advocating for the disabled in Ohio and other areas of the Unites States. He recognized the inadequate support for disabled persons in Ghana and established Echoing Hills Ghana located in Madina-Ogbojo, Accra. For many people with disabilities in Ghana, life is not only a struggle to succeed, but also an everyday struggle to survive. Echoing Hills provides long-term housing, support, and love to those who need it most.

I will be completing an entire year of my fieldwork placement at Echoing Hills. I currently complete 8 hours or more each week, and plan to continue doing so until my departure in June of 2017. I work on a micro level individual basis, as well as in a mezzo group setting, and macro setting with the entire organization. I am able to act as a Social Worker and mentor to the students. My role is to assist with lesson planning, facility improvement, draft social inquiry reports, and be a listening ear to the children. I teach Math and English in the classrooms for the younger children. This organization does not have adequate support, as it is not funded by the country.

As I previously stated, Echoing Hills is a non-profit organization. Consequently, funds are scare. For example, the "Echoing Hills Clinic"--which provided first aid, treatment, and check-ups, to the children and staff--was forced to close due to inadequate funding. Currently, there are 50 girls and 28 boys being housed at Echoing Hills. Most found on the streets as victims of abuse and rejection. They find happiness in the smallest of things. The youngest child is 4 years of age, while the oldest is in his late 50's. There is a huge need for medical supplies, educational materials, bedding, clothing, food donations, and money for dormitory remodeling. Admittedly, anything is helpful and appreciated.

The majority of the funds are needed for remodeling because housing conditions are not safe for the children. There is a huge termite infestation in both male and female dormitories, along with electrical issues due to weather conditions. Tiling is also needed in the washroom to mitigate mold and bacteria growth.

Funding is also needed so that children can be sent to school with adequate supplies. One placement in itself costs $100, but even then, school supplies are not always available.

Staff are not paid for the work done at Echoing Hills, but they are dedicated regardless.

Volunteers and donors are essential to maintain upkeep of the facility.

Any/EVERYTHING is greatly appreciated!
