Send Urban Youth to Nature!
Picture shows us planting a tree in our school yard on Earth Day April 22, 2014!
Enjoying time in nature is life changing. For these high school students in Brooklyn getting the chance to go outside of the city is a rare event. Last year we created the Nature, Environment and Outdoor (NEO) club which seeks to bring about awareness of the outdoors and help young people to be stewards of their community. Many of these students are economically disadvantaged and all live in an urban setting. We worked with Trees NY and the Department of Environmental Conservation last year and hope to do many more activities that will get the students outdoors. However we need the funding for teacher coverage, activities and most of all transportation. Last year we were able to raise money and go to the Pocono Environmental Education Center for a day of fun. This year the students want to spend the night under the stars and have a campfire in the great outdoors. We will learn astronomy, take a night hike and learn wilderness survival among other skills. Any donation would be appreciated and all will go to student activities.
