Eating Disorders at Christmas

Donation protected
Christmas can cause overwhelming feelings of anxiety for people with an eating disorder. There is a real need for a special Christmas book for any families with a member who has an eating disorder. It should contain activities that can provide a positive focus for all the family, without relying upon sitting around a table laden with food; recipes for a celebratory buffet of Christmas-themed finger-food that can be enjoyed by all, without triggering the person living through an eating disorder; and Christmas traditions from around the world that are not food-focussed.

Will you enable us to create this?

My daughter, Lizzie, took the selfie at the top of this page at Christmas 2006, just before admission to an inpatient unit for anorexia. Thankfully Lizzie overcame the illness, got a place at medical school and is now a hospital doctor (she also got married, hence her different name ‘Dr Elizabeth McNaught’). Lizzie has written her story in the book Life Hurts: a doctor’s personal journey through anorexia which has already helped many people. Lizzie, and my wife Carol, remember how immensely difficult Christmas was during her illness, which is why we are passionate about helping other families in similar situations, by creating this special Christmas book.

We have produced some content and tested it, with immensely encouraging results.
“Sensitive, sensible, insightful and inspiring. Every family who has a child with an eating disorder needs to have this on their Christmas list... at the very top” Julie (mother) and Naeema (daughter).

We intend to produce this book as a not-for-profit initiative, at LifeHurts.net which we set up to provide resources around Lizzie's book. And, because we want to help people this Christmas, we have already published some for download by donors - just make a minimum £5 donation and we will send you the password to access these resources.

Will you help us raise the £10,000 it will cost to produce the book, cover the first print run and pay for the vital promotion to families who need it? We are passionate about the book being as beautiful and glossy as the other hardback Christmas books that are available, because we want people with an eating disorder to feel as important and valued as those who buy the other Christmas books. (Selling some of the first print run will then give ongoing sustainability for more print runs and promotion).

If you join with us we offer rewards to thank you. Everyone who gives £5 will get access to the Advent Calendar and Christmas is Coming activity which we have published on this private page for donors (we aim to send the password to donors within one working day of the donation). If you give £100 you will also get your name listed on the supporter page. If you give £500 you will also get the name you choose on the dedication page.

Our promise. We will do everything we can to reach the target and create this book because we believe that a beautiful glossy book will help people with eating disorders to feel important and valued at Christmas. However, if we don’t reach our target, we will use whatever money we do receive to publish content on a free-access website with a supporter page and a dedication panel.

We’ll post updates of our progress here on this page. Please share these with your friends to help us reach the target.
