Help Ti Kay Haiti Fight TB and HIV

Donation protected
When I first arrived in Port-Au-Prince in 2011 I was young, inexperienced, and excited to make a difference.  Through a bit of luck, I met Dr. Megan Coffee.  Stalwart, intelligent, and well-versed in local culture, Megan and her organization embody everything necessary for successful, sustainable medical work.  She has held my respect and commitment for years now.

During my last stint at the Ti Kay clinic, I befriended a young patient named Jean (name edited for privacy).  Jean was friendly and helpful; one of the brilliant sufferers who use their energy and good spirit to help us keep the others alive, cajoling them into taking medications that often make them feel violently ill.  He was a blessing to have with us, and I worried that he might become one of the patients who, through their selfless devotion, fall victim to a lack of appropriate care themselves.

Jean didn't.  Rather than slipping away in front of my eyes, he became stronger and stronger as time went on.  By the end of my stay, we were discussing his eventual transfer to outpatient care.  6 months later, he was wishing me a Happy Birthday from his home.

Jean now works in outpatient care for the clinic, helping to bring others back to life and stem the tide of tuberculosis in the crowded slums of Port-Au-Prince.  His recovery literally brings tears to my eyes, and shows the brilliant and rippling impact of saving a single, beautiful life.

I have personally sat with patients as they died from asphyxiation.  I have seen the fear in their eyes, and felt the overwhelming courage in their hearts as they fought for breath before slipping away.

No one should have to die that way.

To that end, we are collecting donations for our airfare and patient care. The bad news: the inpatient clinic where I worked in the past has been shut because of long-term hospital reconstruction, putting many patients back on the street or, for those who have them, in family homes to suffer without adequate care. The good news: we have been offered the space in another hospital for a new clinic!

My greatest dream is to construct that clinic and bring all our Haitian staff (paid through other ongoing funding efforts) back to work, and all our patients back into their arms.  Mia's airfare has long ago been covered, so we are well into raising the 15k we need to help put that clinic on the map.

For all donations above that, see the wishlist at the bottom of the page for detailed prices; this is where your money will go.

I am offering a set of rewards to large scale donors.  Ti Kay is a 501(c)3, so all donations will be tax deductible!

Thank you already for those who have donated, and in advance for all who will.  When I'm sweaty, exhausted, and overwhelmed in Port-Au-Prince this fall, I will think of all of the love behind our efforts.  I will never forget your heartfelt assistance.  How could I, when every day I will be soothed by the sound of happy, relaxed breathing from countless patients as a reminder?

You are all my personal heroes.

With immense gratitude,
Evan

P.S. I am still learning to stop writing these things in public coffee shops.  Until then, I'll keep telling people I have allergies.
