Legal Costs for Sexual Harassment Complaint

Dear friends and colleagues,
As you likely know, the structures that exist within universities to address sexual harassment have a long history of failing to protect students and other community members who come forward with complaints. Though some progress has been made in recent years, the reporting process is still often grueling and, because legal help is advisable, expensive. I am personally grateful to the strong people who choose to file complaints within this system in the hope that their efforts will lead to positive change.
Emily Martin, currently a prize postdoctoral fellow at UCSC, is in the midst of a long process that began when she filed a Title IX report regarding a professor at a former institution. Emily estimates that her legal expenses so far have reached approximately $5,000. In my opinion, expense should not be a barrier to pursuing Title IX complaints.
