E. Murphy's Top Surgery Fund

Hello everyone! My name is Erin Murphy and I am a 32-year-old nonbinary genderqueer individual from Iowa.

As you may know, Iowa Medicaid is currently not required to pay for gender affirming surgeries. In fact, Amerigroup shows on their website that they cover them, but in reality they do not. Because of this, I am hoping to raise the money from people like you who believe everyone has the right to be able to live the life they were meant to live.

My journey started back in high school, when in a psychology class we were watching a video. There was a woman in the video who was transgender, and talked about her journey. This was the first time I'd even heard this word before - transgender.

It was then that I started my own research. I found people on YouTube who described their lives as they went through their own gender transitions, and I couldn't help but relate to the things they were feeling. I heard others talk about things that I had felt, but had found difficult to articulate. For a few years, I considered myself to be genderfluid - one who some days may feel more female, and other days might feel more male, others more androgynous. But eventually, I felt only either masculine, or androgynous - the female side wasn't really there anymore, and I started identifying as genderqueer.

I started experimenting, changing little things to see how they made me feel. From using men's deodorant all the way up to eventually binding my chest. While it took a few tries to find the right one, when it fits perfectly, its like a dream. It makes me look and therefore feel amazing. Binding my chest boots my confidence and self image. I can't help but love who I see in the mirror. But, in the end, there's only so much binding can do for me in the long run.

I am seeking top surgery, also known as a double mastectomy procedure, to have my breasts removed and my chest reconstructed to resemble that of a male, a surgery that I have been feeling a need to have for years. A surgery which would greatly increase my quality of life. I plan to have my surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics,  which quoted me a bill of $8450 for the procedure at my consultation in May, and my insurance has made it clear that they have no intention of paying for any of it.

I appreciate your time in coming by my page, and hope you will consider donating as it would mean the world to me. Even a dollar helps! -E. Murphy
