DO YOUR PARENTS KNOW YOU'RE STRAIGHT? Written by Riley McLean.

PROMOTE EQUALITY AND SUPPORT YOUTH ART.

Support a touring production which will benefit the LGBTQ+ community, people suffering with mental health such as anxiety/depression and general public who are willing to listen and understand how it feels to belong to a minority group.

Touring Company: Bearfoot Theatre.

"An excellent portrayal, mind-opening for a lot of straight people. Very healing and also excruciatingly revealing."

DYPKYS is an original Australian play which follows the life of Casey Miller, a straight teenage boy struggling to find his way in a homosexual society. Feeling isolated, the aspiring author creates a character- a lesbian girl called Riley- who lives in an opposite reality (not unlike our own) where heterosexual is the norm and homosexual is the minority.  Riley operates as a reflection of Casey as he documents twisted, fantasy versions of his reality through her eyes. But Riley can't always be happy- not when Casey's not...Because that's not fair.

"One of the most moving pieces of theatre I have seen created in my life."

DYPKYS first began as a ten minute sketch for the Short and Sweet festival through the Regional Institute of Performing Arts. It has since been through multiple workshops and staged readings and was officially produced at the Civic Playhouse in April 2017 with Eclectic Productions. The show was very well received, with many members of the audience suggesting that a touring production was in order.

"It's something that is needed nowadays with the amount of gender inequality and discrimination."

DYPKYS was written in support of the LGBTQ+ commuity to offer hope (particularly to youth and those suffering from mental illness) in our society. Especially considering the implications of the current postal vote, I believe that the messages in DYPKYS are incredibly vital for all generations to see.

"I have always been supportive and accepting but your show really gave me a deeper insight into the personal journeys of my own loved ones that I had never really spent too much time thinking about."

The plan is to tour the show with Bearfoot Theatre outside of Newcastle to spread the message to a wider demographic- It's a big project but we are passionate and excited to tackle it. We are considering proposed seasons in areas such as Sydney, Gosford, Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie and Newcastle- although the amount of places we can visit will depend on wether we have the budget to continue. We will be targetting school groups as well as the general public in all areas.

"I for one am still emotionally drained because this show is indescribable"

We will need at least double of our $10,000 goal to tour the production- we will be raising the rest of the budget as best we can. A small donation of any amount could offer a huge support to our cause- a cause which remains shockingly relevant in 2017.
We truly believe that this is a show Australia needs to see and we hope that you can all believe in it too.

"Last night was the first time I've ever given a standing ovation to a Newcastle production- It is everything theatre should be.”
